Michigan's Brady Hoke ranked 4th-best Big Ten coach by Sporting News, trails rivals Urban Meyer, Mark Dantonio

By Kyle Meinke

Michigan's Brady Hoke was named the Big Ten's coach of the year last year. But at least one publication doesn't think he's the league's top overall coach.

In fact, he's fourth -- with both of his biggest rivals ranked ahead of him.

Sporting News' Steve Greenberg ranked the Big Ten's coaches, and crowned Ohio State's Urban Meyer No. 1. Wisconsin's Bret Bielema came in at No. 2, followed by Michigan State's Mark Danontio and then Hoke.

Michigan's Brady Hoke was ranked the fourth-best football coach in the Big Ten by Sporting News.

Angela J. Cesere | AnnArbor.com

"Kind of hard to believe, isn’t it, that Hoke was a sub-.500 coach pre-Michigan?" Greenberg wrote of Hoke. "But he slowly built Ball State into a prime MAC team, then turned San Diego State around more quickly. His first season in Ann Arbor was a mind-blower. It seems Hoke has improved throughout the first decade of his career — and that he’s exactly the right guy at the right time for the Wolverines."

Hoke went 11-2 in his debut season in Ann Arbor, and led the Wolverines to their first BCS win since 2000. He also toppled Ohio State, halting Michigan's seven-game losing streak against its chief rival.

But Buckeyes' interim coach Luke Fickell has since been replaced by Meyer, who swiftly cobbled together a superb 2012 recruiting class -- one that is ranked ahead of the Wolverines' heralded group.

His reputation as a coach also precedes him, after capturing two national titles at Florida. Sporting News cites that reputation for naming Meyer its top Big Ten coach, before he's even coached a Big Ten game.

SigningDay_UrbanMeyer.jpg

Urban Meyer's credentials earned him the top spot among Big Ten coaches before he has coached a game in the conference.

AP Photo

"There’s no way to look at this man’s credentials and put him anywhere other than in the top spot," Greenberg wrote. "No matter that he’s never won a Big Ten game, nor that he ended poorly at Florida before sitting out 2011. About those creds: two national titles; a 7-1 bowl record; a 12-0, Fiesta Bowl-winning season at Utah; 17 victories in two years at Bowling Green. Ridiculous."

Dantonio also is ranked ahead of Hoke, after guiding Michigan State to consecutive 11-win seasons -- and, of course, four consecutive wins against the Wolverines.

"Dantonio’s 11-2 season in 2010 — during which he was confronted by a frightening health crisis — represents one of the great coaching performances of the 2000s," Greenberg wrote. "His 2011 Spartans, who likewise won 11 games, were even better.

"Brady Hoke’s Michigan program may have more upside, but Dantonio is the best coach in the state right now."

Rounding out the rankings behind Hoke are Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, Nebraska's Bo Pelini, Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald, Penn State's Bill O'Brien, Minnesota's Jerry Kill, Illinois' Tim Beckman, Purdue's Danny Hope and Indiana's Kevin Wilson.

Clearly, Meyer, Bielema, Dantonio and Hoke comprise the upper crust of Big Ten coaches right now. Who would you rank No. 1? And is Hoke too high, too low or just right?

A link on ESPN.com listed the B1G dream team assistant coaching staff. It had Borges as the offensive coordinator and Mattison as the defensive coordinator. I agree with that assessment 100%. It also had Fred Jackson as the best running back coach...which also makes perfect sense. You can argue about who the best HC is all day, but one thing is certain...Hoke doesn't mess around when it comes to hiring the very best assistants.

To heck with it AZ, the 2012 season is right around the corner. I'll say one thing having lived a long time in the desert, if RR screams and yells and throws fits at Arizona like he did at Mich. ol RR's gonna have a heat stroke.

By the way 7718...I don't want to come off as attacking you personally, that's not my intention. I know you are a Michigan fan, just like me. It's just that it seems to me that 90% of your posts make some round about reference to the previous coach and 'his' players having success under Hoke, the previous coach not getting support, etc. Let it go, man. You've mentioned before to stop bringing up the previous coach and to let him be. You need to follow your own advice and let it go...then buffoons like me won't mention him, either. Michigan is on track and enjoying great success now. Enjoy it.

7718, get over RR already. He could have hired whoever he wanted, just like he did at AZ. He hired the EXACT same staff, except Casteel. Mike Martin said his defensive line coach was not qualified to coach the D-Line! That's RR's hire!!! Gibson was AWFUL...and he's back with RR at AZ coaching DB's again! RR stuffed the 3-3-5 down Robinson's throat and caused him to fail, imo. RR failed on his own. I don't care if you love RR like a brother, but the excuses that you come up with feel like an attempt to belittle the accomplishments of Hoke and his staff, just like RR himself has done in his comments regarding UM's success last season. Hoke has no problem sharing the spotlight with great coordinators, RR did, imo. He sank his own ship.

az, good article. Brady and staff have so much advantage at Mich and the ability to reel in some of the best talent in the country. Nick Saben quit his coaching job at Mich. state because he knew he would never get the kind of talent he needed to build a national powerhouse, it's really simple math. The really good coaches like Brady and Nick Saben go to and for the most part stay at the great schools, that's where both the talent and money is although I think Brady would have come to Mich. for less than what he was offered. I can't put Urban in that class because he seems like he's always walking on egg shells emotionally. Urban puts himself out there but Urban has a bad rap and he'll have to work his way out of that with longevity at ohio state. Sorry folks but as a whole, Brady and staff get the nod as the best group of coaches in the 10.

Opinions are just that...what happens in football season is all that matters. We have to beat these coaches' teams on the field not through discussion. What I saw was a game that was the BIGGEST JOKE in BCS history. One team was the first ever runner-up from it's conference to play in a BCS game. That team came from a conference that is now 2-13 in BCS contests. The other team ran an offense that was PATHETIC gaining only 173 yards from scrimmage and averaging less than 2 yards per carry. Somebody had to lose this game...but the BIGGEST LOSER was the college football fan...and they tuned out in droves! This "stinker" is a prime reason why the BCS is changing it's process. The game was a Hokie Jokie!

Richie "Grave Digger" Hebner - big blue will once again physically dominate MSU and ? What is the basis of your opinion? You're doing a HUGE DISSERVICE to logic with this post. M hasn't physically dominated MSU since November 2, 2002 when Bobby WIlliams threw in the towel. The Spartans PHYSICALLY DOMINATED HOKE's team in 2011...far more so than in the 3 wins vs. DickRod. What game were you watching? It's been a decade or more since the aMaized and Blew have had there way with OSU on the field. Had Braxton Miller not barely overthrown Devier Posey in the closing minute on November 26th wouldn't it be 10 straight? Where's the threat?

With this ranking being based on the individual performance of the coaches in the B1G and not their performance in the B1G, than I think it's a pretty accurate assessment. If this were based on performance as a B1G coach, then no, Meyer should not be on the list, Hoke should not be as high, 1 season is not enough. I hate to say it, but Dantonio would be #1, he has built MSU to 1 of the top tier teams in the B1G and in the Nation with less top tier recruits.

Hail Mary says "I'm afraid Mark probably had his best shot the last 3 yrs. cause with Brady and Urban reloading and building back into national powerhouses the BTN is no longer going to be a cake walk for MSU or Wisconsin." What are you talking about? OSU won or shared 6 straight B10 championships under "The Vest". OSU doesn't need to "reload". On the other hand, UM hasn't come close to wining a B10 championship for nearrly a decade. The Ohio State program is FAR AHEAD of the Michigan program. You're hear as if parity has been achieved after you BARELY beat an OSU program that had more losses (7) than any other OSU team since 1897! Your fans got so excited about beating a team that lost it's head coach only 3 months before the season started that they charged the field? THAT WAS HILARIOUS! Sorry boys but Brady finishes ahead of Dantonio just like he did in the final polls last yr. Dantonio's teams will be decent but the league is about to return to the norm., "The Big Two". MSU finished ahead of M in one poll and behind M in another. The current "Big 2" is MSU and Wisconsin. The "Big 3" is MSU, WIsconsin and OSU. Beat Iowa and win a road game against a good opponent...then talk!

Hailmary

Fri, May 4, 2012 : 4:58 p.m.

Dantonio has a decent record but his team breaks down occasionally at very unexpected times. Dantonio on a personal note expresses extreme insecurity about the Wolverines even though his record against the Wolves is impressive. With Mark's seemingly quick spitefulness at anything Wolverine one can only assume he is not comfortable with his ability to maintain a winning percentage of his in state rival probably because he knows he has his current winning streak against the worst coach and Mich. team in Wolverine history speaking of RR and his 3 yr. tenure. Mark did beat Brady his first yr. but then again Mark and company were manhandled by Notre Dame. If Mark wants to be with the Elite he's going to have to play every opponent tough and not just Mich. Wolves. I'm afraid Mark probably had his best shot the last 3 yrs. cause with Brady and Urban reloading and building back into national powerhouses the BTN is no longer going to be a cake walk for MSU or Wisconsin. Sorry boys but Brady finishes ahead of Dantonio just like he did in the final polls last yr. Dantonio's teams will be decent but the league is about to return to the norm., "The Big Two".

It's understandable and it's just one writers opinion. I think Coach Hoke is a,"great fit at Mich." and I like his steadfast demeanor. I think his steady manner will give him longevity at Mich unlike some of these other coaches that seem to, "coach scared". My opinion after observing some of these coaches is that, they act desperate and that to me = burnout or worse, physical and emotional problems. A couple of these coaches ranked ahead of Brady have already displayed serious ailments. Brady is the type of coach that will not verbally try to bring attention to himself and that in itself exhibits a quiet confidence that tells me the man will express himself by his actions on the field and taking care of his players and the program. If you lined up all the Big 10 coaches and I had my choice I would take Brady Hoke. The reason I would pick Brady is that I think he's a winner both on the field and off and I think he brings a quiet dignity to the program and the state of Mich. Brady did not bring a bunch of bad baggage to Mich., I think he has the players best interest at heart and he appears to be a solid family man, ya, I'll take Brady Hoke any day.

I agree with you, hailmary. I actually have no complaints that some writer might be of the opinion that these three coaches are ranked ahead of Hoke. They are all good coaches. However, Hoke is the best coach for Michigan, and I would take him over any of the three ranked ahead of him in this poll, or any behind him for that matter. At this point, I'm happy to have Hoke over Harbaugh and Miles, too. He's at Michigan for the long haul and will have Michigan ranked not only among the top in the conference for years to come, but in the nation well.

From an unbiased perspective, you have to give the nod to Urban Meyer as the top coach in the league. No other coach has won a national championship, let alone two. He has turned around average programs in short amounts of time. I understand the dislike for the man but you have to give him props. But I do think Brady will be considered in his league very soon. I disagree with Bielema and Dantonio being ranked ahead of Brady. I think it's a tie right now between all three. However, the next two seasons will clearly put Hoke ahead of those two.

MRunner73

Fri, May 4, 2012 : 11:26 a.m.

Bah-humbug with these polls. Ridiculous. Simply put, the coachs rank should be tied to the most recent won-lost record in the conference, period. That means to former IL Head Ron Zook was among the bottom of the list, Brady Hoke near the top. Perhaps just behind MSU and WI. Urban Meyer is unranked for now.

But when the polls turn out other than we think we deserve, all of a sudden they are garbage. @rightmind250: You say we got Mr. 500? No, not AT Michigan; he's .818 in his current career AT Michigan. And if you count his past Michigan coaching career: you'd have to add his PERFECT record for 1997. Meyer, Dantonio and Beilema aren't that impressive. Meyer's an unkown but his record in the Big 10 is yet to be determined and because Ohio cares more about beating Michigan than anything, they get great coaches who eventually self-destruct. Dantonio holds a 4-0 record over Michigan but that's bogus: the first three wins were against one of the worst teams (and coaches) in all of Div. 1 football. This has happened before and it always ends with MSU returning the back seat when it comes to competing with Michigan. Bielema also gets lucky like past WI coaches: they manage to get top runners but that's all they got in the long run. So Bielema will fade too, watch for it.

Bielema has been to 2 straight Rose bowls, and can't complain about his ranking. We all love Hoke, rightly so--he has coached well, he has said and done the right things, but let's see how he does over a few seasons before complaining about his ranking here. AZ, of course it was to Michigan...but this isn't about the Universities, it's about the coaches. The 7-1 record is Urban Meyer's bowl record, not Floridas, not Utahs, not Ohio States. If we are referring to the coaches records, we have to be consistent. That 1 loss was to Lloyd Carr, not Brady Hoke. Essentially, if we are talking about Hoke vs. Meyer, the Lloyd Carr coached Michigan victory is irrelevant, because Hoke had nothing to do with it.

azwolverine

Wolverines fans: Lets now sit back and watch the 2012 football season to see what Brady Hoke, his staff and players DO ABOUT THIS. As for Meyer and Dantonio: Sports writer Greenberg just made your 2012 games against Michigan that much harder. Coach Bielema: you get lucky, no game vs Michigan this year. So again, you get to try to get to the top of the Big Ten pile and may well meet your match in Michigan this year.
