Rivals.com ranks Big Ten football recruiting classes by position; Michigan's running backs No. 1

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Rivals.com recruiting analyst Mike Farrell says the Michigan football team's incoming running backs are the best group in the Big Ten. The Wolverines' other nine position groups range from third-best to 12th in Farrell's Big Ten rankings released today.

Farrell writes that "Michigan's 1-2 punch of Justice Hayes, who can be used all over the field, and Thomas Rawls, the perfect big back for the Wolverines' offense, is tough to beat."

Ohio State dominated the rankings, pulling in the top ranking in the quarterback, tight end, defensive tackle, linebacker and defensive back positions.

Conference newcomer Nebraska earned top honors at offensive line and athlete while Indiana (wide receiver) and Penn State (defensive end) topped one category each.

Besides the running back position, Michigan's recruiting class was decidedly defense-heavy. Farrell ranked the Wolverines' incoming defensive ends (Brennen Beyer, Keith Heitzman, Jack Miller and Chris Rock), linebackers (Frank Clark, Kellen Jones, Desmond Morgan and Antonio Poole) and defensive backs (Greg Brown, Tamani Carter, Blake Countess and Delonte Hollowell) at No. 3 in the Big Ten.

Single signings at the tight end (Chris Barnett) and athlete (Raymon Taylor) positions put Michigan at No. 4 in those categories. The Wolverines have the eighth-ranked offensive line class (Chris Bryant and Tony Posada) and the ninth-ranked quarterback class (Russell Belomy).

Michigan did not have a defensive tackle or wide receiver in its recruiting class, so they're at the bottom of the rankings in those positions.

I fear for the future of Michigan football Is Hokeamania a retreat to Carrball (in later years)? Does the formula from 1997 work in 2011 or has the game passed it by? Is our real end goal to win the Big Ten? I suppose we will find out this year

I think we are #1 in the amount of posters who can rhyme, and do rhyme so well. I also think we salvaged a pretty decent class. Lets not forget we have last years feshmen, redshirt-freshmen and sophs that will develolpe over the next year. Just because RR recruited them, (no matter how you feel about RR) dosen't mean these kids don't have talent. And I agree with JimRhatt, we put too much stock in someone-elses ratings and it is all about fit and making a team. The other thing we do as fans is---we look at this class and think they are going to turn the team around this year, when most should red-shirt. Still--- This IS Michigan

"#1 in running backs is fine BUT if i remember correctly Defense was the problem last season" One of the defense's MANY problems is that it was ALWAYS on the field. Score or not score, the Michigan offense under whatshisname was incapable of burning time off the clock. A respectable running game that features someone other than an undersized quarterback will help the defense. BTW, those with man crushes on whathisname who pine for his offense and who use Auburn's success as a point of comparison ought look at the following: Cam Newton, 6'6" tall, 249 pounds. D-Rob, 6' tall, 193 pounds soaking wet. Might explain why D-Rob got injured in every game this last season. Good Night and Good Luck

Considering that T.Forcier was a Fail and Denard wasn't the starter from the Guy Before's first class, it appears that The Incredible Hoke's first recruiting class stacks up very well against the Guy Before's first class. Keeping in mind that a given year's recruit squad won't fulfill it's potential until they're juniors; it sure looks like the Wolverines will be rising but struggling a bit for another couple seasons. But - at least there's a 100% chance that the 2013 season will see NO losses to the bottom half of the Big Ten (+2). I'd also expect that it will be all W's against non-conference opponents in addition to sure wins against some Big Ten opponents. No more "hoping for" 7-win seasons. Hokadamus Quatrain Nine: The Guy Before will be no more In his place will be a capable Face In the Autumn of Eleven, The Blue Fans will be as in Heaven He that Brandon did nominate will come to dominate Go Blue!

I am being positive--we, apparently, didn't need a running back who had a man crush on whatshisname. As for the my signature . . . Good Night and Good Luck

I do not think we will play all of these running backs this season. Due to that the RB's are some of the most athletic members on the Team. I think there will be some position changes.

Theo our leader of poem and rhyme, He's way past second grade, ahead of his time. The M offensive line will create such holes, Our great backs will moonwalk to the touchdown poles. Our king will win so many games the books we'll rewrite, The Big House will roar and reveal in delight. Theo and the gang will be there through thick and thin, We'll stand and cheer sending the opponents back to the gym.

Coming in last at wide receiver is not a problem since the current team is loaded with them. On the other hand, coming in last in the defensive tackle rankings is a problem since that was an area of need. I read where Coach Hoke recognizes this and will double his efforts to target defensive linemen next year. He came close on a couple of recruits at that position but the late start was too much to overcome. Since there is such a glut at WR, slot, and running back, it makes sense for some of them to switch to defensive back where quality is lacking and there would be a possible opportunity to play sooner if they are good.

Our backs have speed, but they don't have bulk. I'd like to see some guys that look like the hulk. Yeah, that might slow em down and make the crystal hard to seize, but guys like that you can't tackle at the knees. So we want quick speed and we want size too. We want guys with "physicality" So what did Coach do? He went out and recruited for the maize and the blue. So now there's no problem For the form he can teach Rest easy friend Theo, the crystal is back and it's well within reach.

UM got what they needed most, a "kicker", defensive bodies and upgraded big ten RBs. Quality coaches! Ratings are overrated. It's about filling needs. If they added a 5 star WR and QB their ranking would have gone up, but not the team, much. Good Job, Brady! Go Blue!!

@Theo, well let me see, oh yeah, 1997, great defense and all around solid team in all phases, what a concept. The only reason that Texas and Auburn won Championships is because their QB's were such mega studs in college anyway. Also, they didn't play a full on spread, they had other types offenses incorporated into their scheme. So are you like Portage now, calling people young one's? What are you like 70 yrs old, kid? Meangoblue blows your socks off in poetry!!!! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Can't wait till we have 11 offensive linemen on every snap. Blue hairs will love it, 2nd graders will rant and whine (won't THAT be new?), while the knowledgeable old guard (myself, tater, dusty, terry star, portage, and lorain) will just shake its collective head and wait. Wait for the return of reason. He's an Illustrious King, Not a Blustrious King. He certainly is An Industrious King. Shawshanked he was, With no Redemption. Hoke now has A brief exemption. In Year One, if he doesn't win ten; Second graders bellow, "Here we go again!" Note to Meangoblue: you have some potential, son. But I know this one guy, and he said your poems might be shtoooopid.

That is a good start. We need more production from the Running Back's in order for the offense to be competitive vs tough Big Ten defenses.

1997 Theo. How many Crystals (or anything above 7th place in the Big Ten) did the QB as primary ball carrier get us? Crickets....chirping as Theo struggles to answer logically. Dont ask those questions Theo. You lose every time. Go Blue.
