Wet conditions force closure of popular parking areas for Big Chill at the Big House

By Jeff Arnold

Due to wet conditions and a forecast that calls for more precipitation, the Michigan athletic department announced Friday the university's golf course will not be used for parking on Saturday for the Big Chill at the Big House.

Additionally, Ann Arbor Golf and Outing announced it would not allow parking on its grassy areas for the Michigan-Michigan State outdoor hockey game (3 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit) that is expected to draw more than 100,000 at Michigan Stadium.

Michigan golf course manager Charlie Green said last week that a combination of snow combined with warmer temperatures would force permanent damage to the golf course if cars parked there. While cooler temperatures would be fine, melting snow would allow tires to sink into the ground.

Parking in the Green Lot will be permit only.

Parking operations will proceed as normal for Ann Arbor Pioneer High School and Brown Lot, Grey Lot and Red Lot locations. Limited parking spots will be available to the public for $20 in each location.

The Michigan Varsity Tennis Center (Brown Lot) is located south of the U-M Golf Course and is accessible from State Street. The lot is within walking distance of Michigan Stadium, with a courtesy path running through the golf course providing a direct link between the lot and the stadium.

Entrances for the Red Lot and Grey Lot are located farther north on State Street.

The Ann Arbor Transit Authority (AATA) provides service from 22 different shuttle locations to Michigan Stadium. Tickets for the shuttles, priced at $1.50 each way, will be available at TheRide's main office (2700 South Industrial Highway) and at participating hotels.

@ happy Puppy, that is just awful. No need for added stressors on the day of a big standardized test like the ACT. Someone from AAPS has to have egg all over their face for this one. The kids should have been given the option to forego today's test and been given a refund. Does anyone know if Huron or Skyline is sitting empty today?

I love hockey - hockey is great but... There is an ACT test scheduled at Pioneer today and the parking situation is atrocious. I called Pioneer weeks ago and asked what the parking would be and they said there would be ACT parking the 'parking people' knew all about the test. Guess what, when I got ther at 7:30 this morning, they were just learning about the test. They made all the proctors move their cars, wouldn't let people park (at first) only drop off, then they found out some of the kids needed to actually park and finally directed them over the curb and onto the grass. For some of these kids, this test will determine their college future and this is not the kind of stress they need. Some kids were running in very late. I have to go back at 12 to pick my child up, I hope they let me in the parking loop and that Stadium or the lot entrance isn't closed. Not sure who is more to blame here, the people at Pioneer who didn't really make sure there would be parking for students or the parking people who can't be flexible.
