Ypsilanti tops West Bloomfield at Motor City Roundball Classic
BEVERLY HILLS -- With little knowledge of its opponent at Sunday night's Motor City Roundball Classic, the Ypsilanti High School boys basketball team simply relied on what it knows best.
The Phoenix wreaked havoc with their full-court pressure defense, creating turnovers and easy baskets on their way to a big early lead and an eventual 55-49 win over West Bloomfield at Detroit Country Day.
"We didn't get a chance to scout them, so we went in with a real simple philosophy of doing what we're fundamentally taught," said Ypsilanti coach Steve Brooks. "If you haven't seen a team, you can only worry about what you're doing yourself."
Ypsilanti senior Conner Heine scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the first quarter as the Phoenix (3-1) jumped out to a 23-12 lead and never trailed again. (Rest of the story | Boxscore)
