Heritage Row project moves to Ann Arbor City Council for approval

By Ryan J. Stanton

The proposed Heritage Row apartment complex project received the blessing of the Ann Arbor Planning Commission in a 6-2 vote this week and now moves to the City Council for final approval.

The Ann Arbor Chronicle has complete coverage of this week's meeting on its Web site. Click here to read the story.

Ann Arbor developer Alex de Parry received mixed reactions last month when he presented his newly unveiled Heritage Row Apartments project to the Planning Commission for the first time.

Heritage Row, an incarnation of the development formerly known as City Place, proposes up to 82 apartment units with 154 bedrooms. Contrary to previous plans that included tearing down seven century-old homes, de Parry vows to keep them intact and complete upgrades that follow federal guidelines for historic rehabilitation.

De Parry proposes building three new brick apartment buildings behind the seven historic houses along the 400 block of South Fifth Avenue, just south of downtown Ann Arbor. Council members have been tough critics of previous versions of his project but some say they're encouraged by his latest revision.

This is a win win for everyone (except for the diehards who keep moving the goal posts and want to keep Ann Arbor frozen in time). A great use of scarce urban land for low rise infill that is now just a parking lot behind the existing buildings. I agree with a2grateful's comment about Ramsburg. What a hypocritical statement for her to make. She is one of the problems in this town along with all the others who want to turn the clock back to the nineteenth century.

There was great irony when Ellen Ramsburgh, member of the Citys historic district commission, spoke about neighborhood scale. She looked down at Heritage Row from a significantly TALLER neighboring building to proclaim all buildings below to be within "proper scale."
