Propeller, turbine jet-powered and radio-controlled airplanes were on display at the 29th Flying Pilgrims Radio Control Club Airshow on Saturday and Sunday in Superior Township.
The once-a-year event invites experts, amateurs and fans to witness a flying spectacle of precision and aerobatics.
Jack Kezelian, treasurer of Flying Pilgrims, says the pilots are able to do much more than in years past. Kezelian has organized the event for more than 20 years.
"Engines were barely adequate to fly the plane," he says. "It has progressed leaps and bounds from 15 years ago."
The model planes are doing much more than flying circles around a field.
"Some of the pilots are doing loops and rolls, hammer heads, snap rolls, harriers, tail slides, and hovering," Kezelian says.
He estimated 125 to 150 model planes could be seen between both days. Among them were Sukhois, Tutors, BAE Hawks, Weeks biplanes, P-51 Mustangs, and P-47 Thunderbolts. All participants are required to use planes at least one-quarter scale in size. Most of which range between 60 and 100 inches. There was a B-17 with a wingspan reaching 10 feet.
Kezelian says he hopes the event raises interest and that everybody has a good time.
