Dexter Union Base Ball Club hosts 1860s-style game

By Jeffrey Smith

There's no gloves, swearing, sliding or spitting in this league; it's a "gentleman's game."

The Union Base Ball Club of Dexter hosted Monitor Base Ball Club of Chelsea Saturday afternoon for an 1860s vintage game. Dressed in vintage style uniforms and following 19th century rules, the teams faced off in a friendly rivalry in a field overlooked by the historic Gordon Hall, just outside downtown Dexter.

Photographer Jeffrey Smith captured these images.

Both Dexter and Chelsea received last minute invites to the tournament, but because we were not expected to be invited, we had already scheduled this match. I think I speak for both clubs when I say that we hope to be part of the tournament in the near future!
