Earthquake felt in Ann Arbor - did you feel it?

By Juliana Keeping

Update: U.S. Geological Survey confirms earthquake in Canada, felt here in Ann Arbor

We at AnnArbor.com felt our 7th floor office swaying and have confirmed reports of an earthquake with the U.S. Geological Survey.

Let us know if you felt something too in the comments section below. Where were you?

Afterwards, staffers agreed it was hard to say how long we felt the building swaying since it took us a number of seconds to register "Earthquake!" Our guess is 30 seconds or less. We felt a swaying sensation and realized the entire building was moving. A number of us got a tiny bit woozy.

Reports are flooding in on Twitter from sources throughout the city, the U.S. and Canada.

You Tube evidence of the 5.5-magnitude quake that hit Ottawa, Canada today:

I was working on the phone with a woman in Ottawa, Canada, around 1:50pm two days ago when she experienced the 5.5 earthquake. I didn't feel it myself, but we are not far away from that one. Having lived in California for 25 years, I experienced plenty of earthquakes including the 7.1 earthquake in 1989 when I was on the 4th floor of an office building in San Jose, California.

Well, I didn't feel it in Ypsi, so I'm sure this is all a ruse to generate news on a slow day... Kudos to the organizer of this prank, you really found a low of people, spread out over the area, to claim they felt it!

I definately felt the earthquake earlier at work which is the CitiMortgage building. The second floor felt it the most.. the pictures were shaking and the cubicle walls shook.. almost felt like I was rocking on a boat. THEN I get stuck in the damn tornado warning.. I just made it out of the saline area when it touched down! Fun filled day!!

Yes! We felt it on the 3rd floor of a building on N. Ashely St, right between Liberty and Williams. It felt more like a roll, rather than a quake.

I didn't feel it for once, but then I think I was driving. The one in Ohio in the '80s I was on the top floor of 400 N. Ingalls and boy did that feel weird. I wondered if the building would fall. The one in Ohio in the '90s I was on the top floor of a building in Northville that was built in 1875 and had some of it's Oak beams weakened. That felt just as scary. Oh well, maybe I'll feel the next one.

The Institute for Social research building was swaying long enough that on the 5th floor we gathered in the hallway to share our amazement. I immediately assumed it was an earthquake as there was no other explanation.

Workers on the sixth floor of Ann Arbor's city hall said items on top their desks started shaking and copy machines started rattling. At first, they dismissed it as normal disruption from the police-courts building construction going on next door, but quickly realized it was more than that. City Planner Matt Kowalski said he felt an earthquake without question. "You could actually see my water on my desk shake," he said. "I've been around before when they've had a couple other earthquakes in Michigan. This one, though, it was long enough to where I stood up and actually still felt the ground swaying. You could feel the building swaying."

I was at work at the School of Information on North Campus when I felt it. None of my co-workers felt it so I thought I was just losing my mind. Glad to know that it was real and I'm not losing my mind.

I work on the third floor of the Halle Library at Eastern Michigan University when I heard the walls making cracking sounds then the building started to sway left to right with a rumbling sound coming from below. Students came out of study rooms wondering what had just happened and the book shelves on the third floor moved back and fourth... I heard that a 5.5 quake began in in Eastern Canada...
