Former Ann Arbor Police Chief Barnett Jones supervises business associate in Detroit job

By Cindy Heflin

Former Ann Arbor Police Chief Barnett Jones, now working as head of security for the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, is supervising a former business associate working in a newly created position, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Jones is also paid nearly $59,000 more than his predecessor for his work in Detroit, the newspaper reported.

The information comes from documents obtained by the Free Press.

Until January, Jones had also been working as administrator of public safety in Flint. Jones resigned from that job after the Free Press asked questions about his holding two full-time jobs.

In February, an Mlive report revealed that Jones reported he worked eight hours in Detroit on each of three days he spent at a conference he spent in northern Michigan as part of his Flint job.

In Detroit, Jones works for Sue McCormick, former Ann Arbor public services administrator.

His job title is a joke. Time to let him go, Sue.

Sue is equally (more I might argue) as much of the problem.

Am I understanding the following correctly "In February, an Mlive report revealed that Jones reported he worked eight hours in Detroit on each of three days he spent at a conference he spent in northern Michigan as part of his Flint job". He falsified records and defrauded that taxpayers on his contract terms? And he is not being prosecuted for the documentation fraud?

A new EFM in Detroit HAS TO LOOK AT that 59,000 increase in salary. If they don't then the whole thing is a sham. Of course the same problem exists here with the 75,000 increase given to the AAPS superintendent by the school board.

You're not supposed to question the wisdom of our elected officials, I would question the wisdom of those who keep electing them though...............

Doesn't anyone get it? Democrats in Ann Arbor Democrats in Detroit see the problem now? As far as Snyder appointing Fraser not even close.

Another glaring example why Gov. Rick Snyder needs to appoint a financial manager for Detroit.

Except the appointment will still come from the same bank of cronies.

Do you know who appointed Michael Brown to the EFM and then he appointed Barnett Jones to a newly created police "super" chief???

Why is this man never held accountable? He's paid $59,000 MORE? In a city that was just taken over by the State for having a financial emergency? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Why does the water and sewage department need a security service? Just what service does this department perform?

From the Freep: "Jones was asked about his employment while under oath in September during an arbitration hearing involving an Ann Arbor police officer who claimed she was wrongly fired by Jones before he retired as head of police and fire services. "I'm a consultant for the emergency financial manager in the city of Flint, trying to save the police department, the fire department and the city from bankruptcy," Jones testified, according to a hearing transcript obtained by the Free Press. Jones also said he served as an outreach minister for his church in Auburn Hills but never mentioned his work for the water department, which began in May. Jones did not return a message from the Free Press seeking comment. Neither did the two lawyers who questioned him."

He LOVES to throw out the minister reference and put on the preacher's hat whenever the questions get a little tough. Once a liar, always a liar.

Amusing article in the Ann Arbor Observer this month (no link yet) where Mr. Jones whines and plays the race card about his critics in Flint. It's pathetic that Jones and others had/have no moral issues with taking money from two bankrupt Michigan Cities and providing little or no added value to either. I would suggest a review by the US Attorney's Office of Mr. Jones' conduct would be appropriate.

Crony capitalism - exported from Ann Arbor to Detroit. So what were the quid pro quos?

I wouldn't exactly call it an export. It has always been this way and hasn't changed.

Why is there no reappearing somber, full-face photo of Sue McCormick, formerly an Ann Arbor city administrator, who hired Jones in Detroit? Her complicity in this affair makes her equally as newsworthy.

Anyone want to bet that Roger Fraser will be involved in the EFM/Detroit deal? That's where my money is. Snyder's been saving him for something. http://www.annarbor.com/news/ann-arbor-city-administrator-roger-fraser-resigns-to-take-job-in-state-treasurers-office/ http://www.annarbor.com/news/emergency-manager-forum/

For the first time in many years I actually feel sorry for Detroit. If Roger Fraser is appointed EFM of Detroit he will destroy the city. He was the worst city manager that Ann Arbor ever had. He did nothing but make living in the city less pleasant.

The Free Press previously reported that Jones was hired for his Flint position (the other full time job he was doing while also employed by Sue McCormick in Detroit) based on a recommendation from "someone from the State." I wonder who? EFMs are all about cronyism and privatization of public assets, nothing more. I'm not saying the cities and school districts in trouble don't need some serious outside help, but the EFM system is so wide open for abuse and for fast-tracking the ALEC agenda, that in the long run, I think we'll see more harm than good come from it.

Yes, we see the ways of the hornet's nest which has been Ann Arbor city government being spread around the state. Hopefully, people in Michigan will figure out that what we've allowed to flourish in Ann Arbor is not good for rest of the state. (Let alone for our fair city.)
