The intersection at State and East Liberty streets was been closed by Ann Arbor firefighters while they responded to a report of smoke coming from the basement of the MDen.
Firefighters blocked off the State and East Liberty intersection and were not allowing cars to turn right from North University Avenue to State Street.
Two trucks were on scene as of noon Tuesday, prepared to fight a potential fire.
Ann Arbor Fire Battalion Chief Randy Menard told the Michigan Daily that a discarded cigarette caused the smoke. The smoking cigarette was flung outside of the entrance to the store’s basement, and the heating system circulated the smoke through its lower level, according to the Daily. Menard said there were never flames in the basement.
The Ann Arbor Fire Department could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.
La Marsa and the MDen, 303 South State St., were both evacuated.

how did nobody notice the smell of the smoke? cigarette smoke is quite distinct. and how much smoke could possibly come from a cigarette? Was this some crazy situation where the smoke was so bad that it made two buildings evacuate? or, was this someone overreacting without knowing what they were doing? It seems that a lot of resources were wasted yesterday over something that was completely innocuous. thankfully there wasn't a real fire somewhere else in town at the same time.

Listen to aanative above! Where AnnArbor.com got two fire trucks, I don't know. I hope it wasn't the fire department trying to cover it's [expensive] over-response. We counted five fire trucks, two police cars, an ambulance and at least one police motorcycle.

I'm really glad there is a diligent citizen's oversight committee regarding AAFD's response to fire calls.

By 12:30 there were no fewer than four fire trucks and multiple police car. Also, State at Washington was blocked off as well. No shortage of response this time.

A firetruck was pulling into Pioneer ~ 11:10 AM. I noticed all the kids outside, too. False alarm? I called one of my kids, and he didn't know why they'd have a fire drill at lunchtime.
