Milan schools committee has until January for new Big Reds logo; mascot to follow

By Danielle Arndt

The Milan Area Schools Board of Education set a January deadline for creating a new Big Reds logo for the district’s athletics teams, according to a report in the Milan-News Leader.

A simple black and red Big Reds flag flew over the football field at Milan High School during a varsity football game Oct. 12. The district is in the process of redesigning its logo and mascot, which was previously a Native American chief.

The school board voted in April to prohibit the use of Native American imagery for the Big Reds logo and mascot.

All of the logos using the spear and feathers and chief images must be gone by Aug. 30, 2015.

A group of volunteers met Oct. 11 and Oct. 25 to begin the task, the newspaper said. Coming up with a new mascot will be second on the committee’s list of things to tackle, according to the report.

Is there something wrong with "Big Reds"? I'm glad Tecumseh hasn't caved........ They just had a tree stump carved in Chief Tecumseh's honor at the middle school.

I'm sure Native Americans find it a real honor to have a team in Cleveland named "Indians" and another in our nation's capital called "Redskins." Also, the use of imagery such as Chief Wahoo and Chief Illi-ni-wek are offensive. Can you use Native American nicknames and imagery in a non-offensive manner? Yes. It happens in Mount Pleasant and in other areas of the country, but too often it does not. That is what happened in Milan they had an offensive mascot & logo, so they decided to make the change. Everyone who is still holding on to "I'll always be an (insert possibly offensive nickname here)" just move on. Does it really keep you up at night? Do you think people in Tampa walk around with shirts that say, "Always a Devil Ray"...probably not.

This kind of 'sensitivity' is so ridiculous! Since when did we have to be hypersensitive to giving honor to someone refered to as strong and brave? This kind of 'sensitivity' makes my blood boil! Oh dear, I'm caucasian, some native American might take that the wrong way! Keep dividing the population with these sorts of attention drawing, overly analyzed, finger pointing stupidities.......and your thoughts are that it will bring us closer together as a human populous?

Committees and boards have determined that Native Americans should not be honored by team names. Have any of them ever distinguished themselves for strength, courage, wisdom, perseverance, or virtue?

How about some big commie solider walking past ( saluting) Lenin and Marx as a mascot, or perhaps a large 1950s pill or maybe a Irish setter or maybe General Custer( this might make the Indian crowed happy).

yes, because not being culturally insensitive is clearly an authoritarian trait.
