Mom gets suspended sentence, probation for baseball bat assault connected to fatal shooting

By Art Aisner

A Superior Township woman who wielded a baseball bat during a fight that preceded a fatal shooting in January received a suspended jail sentence in Washtenaw County Circuit Court last week.

Marget Tracy Pittman, 35, was ordered to serve six months and 14 days in the county jail for striking at least two people with a bat during the Jan. 23 brawl outside Sycamore Meadows apartments.

But court records show Circuit Judge Archie Brown suspended the sentence and required Pittman, who has a young child, to meet several conditions. He also credited her for 14 days already served in jail and mandated probation for a year.

Pittman pleaded no contest to two counts of aggravated assault for her role in the fight, which involved her 18-year-old son. Jamar Gardner, 30, was trying to stop Pittman’s boyfriend, Larry Hunter, from joining the fray when Gardner was shot.

Hunter was convicted of first-degree murder in June and was scheduled to be sentencing Wednesday. He has appealed the conviction and claims alibi witnesses can prove his innocence, court records show.

Pittman’s plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated that way for sentencing purposes. She faced up to a year in jail on the misdemeanor charge.

I wonder if Judge Archie Brown will preside over the Chris King murder trail?

@meanie "and jcj---she did her time and there were no major or minor injuries to the people she assaulted.." My point is that just because she did not injure someone does not mean she got a just sentence! Lots of people spend more time for less.

@meanie---how can you justify her actions by saying she was "only in jail for 14 days", and "she didn't injure anyone she assaulted". She can't be charged with assault if she didn't touch somebody. Again, I don't know what world you live in, but this doesn't sound like mother of the year material to me. Sounds like she might have some anger issues and has no respect for other people or the law. By the way---I did my research Offender #589975 Date of offense 8/20/2003 Date of sentencing 2/8/2006 Discharge date 2/25/2008

I know Ms. Pitman from the days when selling knock offs and pirate movies to pay the rent bills and feed the kids over reail theft. Anyway, she was always spending time with her children and her son was a young kid 8 years ago. Never known her to be in prison so you really need to check your source of info or cross check to assure it's same person. Protecting your child is a parent's God given natural instinct, to say what you would have done is just talk because there is no time to think of 2nd option when in danger. Sorry someone died but his friend's and family knew he was no stranger to danger. How many times has he been to prison? I've seen him in fight mode against people that was afraid to fight back. Ms. Pittman did what any parent that loves thier child would do in the face of danger. One fault was to run and take the gun man with her. I'm sure she didnt want any of this to happen but in that area, you cant sit down at lunch to reason. unheard of. only screaming, cussing, and a lot of disrespect towards all who's around including themselves. Victim was trying to do rite thing but due to his rep, I would have done the same cause he's known to be a mean man on the street. will be blocked but it's out there.

stevek-- i think you need to do alittle more research on ms pittman's backround, she was never in prison and the only jail time she has ever done was the 14 days in the county jail... i did the research and thats what i came up with...and jcj---she did her time and there were no major or minor injuries to the people she assaulted...

@a---I would not paint Mrs Pittman as mother of the year, she spent 2 years in prison herself. There are many other ways she could have handled the situation

It's terrible someone was killed, but many fail to realize a group of guys were trying to beat up her son. She was trying to protect him. Also, just because a person is dead does not absolve him of his wrong doings.

Again NO consequences for assaulting someone that could have been killed with the bat. Not saying 1 year would or would not have been enough, but 14 days in jail was definitely not enough! Way to go Judge Brown you will soon be as popular for your unpopular rulings as Judge Morris!
