Woman accused of wielding baseball bat in fight that led to fatal shooting enters plea deal

By Art Aisner

A Superior Township woman entered a plea deal to reduced charges Friday for her role in a melee that resulted in the shooting death of a man outside the Sycamore Meadows apartments earlier this year.

Marget Pittman, 35, pleaded no contest to two counts of aggravated assault for wielding a baseball bat during a fight involving several men, including her son, in the 8700 block of MacArthur Boulevard on Jan. 23.

A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt, but is treated as such for sentencing purposes.

Police said Pittman struck at least two people during the fight that started when her son, LaShawn Covington, and Travis Gardner got into an argument. Gardner’s older brother, Jamar, got involved and was shot three times by Larry Hunter, according to testimony during Hunter’s trial last week, officials said.

Hunter was convicted of first-degree murder Wednesday.

Prosecutors added the misdemeanor assault charges against Pittman Friday and agreed to dismiss felony counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to commit great bodily harm. She faces up to one year in jail on each count at sentencing July 28.

Her attorney Mark Hugger, said she was coming to the aid of her son, who she watched go to the ground during the fight with Travis Gardner.

Covington’s trial on one count of assault with a dangerous weapon begins with jury selection on Monday, court records show.
