Power still out for about 1,000 DTE customers following storms in Washtenaw County
Thunderstorms that rolled through the Ann Arbor area around noon today knocked out power to about 2,000 customers of DTE Energy in Washtenaw County, spokesman Scott Simons said, and service had been restored to about half of those by 5:30 p.m.
All should have service restored by Tuesday night, Simons said, but he could not provide a more specific restoration time.
The area with the biggest outage lies between Michigan Avenue and Judd Road southeast of Ann Arbor, where about 600 customers were still without power at 5:30 p.m. Other outages were scattered about the county, with most in the southeastern portion and a few west of Ann Arbor. One in the Chelsea area was affecting 153 customers, DTE said.
Storms knocked out power to about 70,000 of the utility's customers in southeast Michigan, Simons said. About half of those will have service restored Monday, he said, and the rest by late Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a severe thunderstorm watch posted earlier in the day has expired, and the afternoon will be much cooler than forecasters expected.
The storms felled several trees and knocked down electrical wires, dispatchers with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office and Huron Valley Ambulance said.
Trees and limbs were blown down in several locations throughout the county, a sheriff’s department dispatcher said, including at Packard Road and Golfside Drive in Ypsilanti Township. Wires were also down there, a dispatcher said, and the intersection has been closed for repairs.
Among the reports of downed trees or limbs were Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Old Falls Drive in Pittsfield Township, where a tree and wires were reported down, and Ellsworth and Gensley roads in Lodi Township as well as 1386 W. Michigan Ave. in Ypsilanti Township.
As for the rest of the day, expect mostly cloudy conditions and high temperatures in the mid- to upper 70s, said Steve Considine, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township. Forecasters earlier predicted a high in the low 90s and a heat index around 100.
"The storms came through early enough to keep us from getting too hot," Considine said.
Tuesday will bring a high of about 89, but lower humidity, so the heat index should stay below 95, he said.
Areas with power outages are shaded in tan, pink and green. Between 1,500 and 2,500 customers are without power in the tan areas. Between 100 and 500 customers are without power in the green areas. The pink areas represent from 1 to 100 customers without power.

Our power went out for about 5 hours in Lodi Township. I'd love to see a real comparison of how DTE stacks up against other utilities with respect to dealing with repeated outages and the times for restoration. On our street a majority of the homeowners have thrown in the towel and bought their own generators.
