Heat index could top 100 degrees in Ann Arbor area Monday

By Kelly Davenport

After three days of highs in the mid- to upper 80s, expect the weather to get even hotter in the Ann Arbor area before a bit of a break later this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat index Monday could top 100, the service's White Lake Township office reported.

Before then, watch for a chance of thunderstorms Sunday night and Monday night, as moist unstable air moves across southeast Michigan.

The storms aren't expected to be as severe as those the the area has seen in recent weeks. Over the Fourth of July weekend, tens of thousands of DTE Energy customers were left without power for days as thunderstorms ripped through the Detroit area, but largely spared the Ann Arbor area.

The rest of the week looks mostly clear and a little cooler, with highs in the low to mid-80s and little chance for more storms.

Overall, July has been relatively dry after a record-setting soggy spring that delayed crops to area farmers markets. Saturday at the Ann Arbor market, pints of sun-ripened berries crowded tables. Can peaches be far behind?
