Ohio State freshman forward Darik Angeli scored two goals, including the game-winner midway through the third period of the Buckeyes 2-1 win over the Michigan hockey team on Friday night.
The Wolverines extended their winless streak to three games in front of 6,637 at Yost Ice Arena. They have lost three of their last five games by one goal apiece and also tied Miami (Ohio).
Senior forward David Wohlberg finds little solace in the fact that recent games seem they could have gone either way.
"They're not fun right now. If we were on the other side of that you would be feeling better about yourself,” Wohlberg told MGoBlue.com. “We didn't play great either way but they're tough to play when you know it's just one shot and you know it's tied up."
Angeli’s second goal -- which came 7:53 into the third period -- was an odd-angle shot from along the goal line that got behind Michigan goalkeeper Shawn Hunwick.
The win was the sixth straight for the No. 14-ranked Buckeyes (9-3-1, 7-2-1-0), who moved to the top of CCHA standings while Notre Dame picked up a non-conference win over Boston College. Michigan, ranked No. 7 in the national polls, is in seventh place in the conference.
Michigan’s Mac Bennett scored at 15:36 of the first period for a 1-0 lead, but Angeli knocked in a rebound two minutes to tie the game.
Both teams fought off a pair of power plays in a scoreless second period.
Ohio State led in shots 33-30. Hunwick made 31 saves and Ohio State goalie Cal Heeter had 29 stops - including two power-play chances in the final 50 seconds with the Michigan net empty.
