Vada Murray Fund for Cancer Research fundraiser, Club Wolverine age group coaching change and more community sports notes

By Bob Gross

"In Brief" is a collection of announcements and upcoming events that appears in its entirety online and as space permits in our Thursday and Sunday print editions. To submit an item, email sports@annarbor.com.

Sarah Murray said at her husband's memorial service that there wasn't enough attention given to cancer research and enough public information about its many causes.

She vowed to help change that.

Vada Murray, a former Michigan football player and a longtime Ann Arbor police officer, died April 6 at age 43 of lung cancer. Now the Vada Murray Fund for Cancer Research is active and a Sept. 11 fundraiser in Ann Arbor is planned.

The pasta lunch event at the old Pfizer building at 2800 Plymouth Road will begin at 11 a.m. and include an autograph session, memorabilia and a silent auction.

SWIMMING

Kelton Graham named head coach of Club Wolverine's age group program

Former Eastern Michigan swimmer and Huron High School coach Kelton Graham has been named the head coach of Club Wolverine’s age group program, replacing Bailey Weathers.

Graham has coached with the club since it was founded six years ago. “It's a huge opportunity and I’m very grateful," he said. "It's a great tradition to uphold.”

In his new year-round position, Graham will oversee and train Club Wolverine’s almost 20 coaches and sort out pool placement for the club’s different teams. “I’m going to have my hands full,” he said.

Since 2006, Club Wolverine has produced more than 50 college swimmers, something Graham hopes to help continue.

“My goal for the program is to develop top swimmers and make us a force nationally,” he said.

Club Wolverine Evaluation Days

Club Wolverine will hold evaluations from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 30-31 at Fuller Pool. Swimmers should bring a suit, towel and goggles. Evaluations will last about 15 minutes and will result in coaches suggesting which level each swimmer should start training with Club Wolverine. Parents can also ask questions about how the club works.
