• Ann Arbor law firm Stevenson Keppelman Associates announce that Karen M. Cobb joined SKA in October. At SKA, Cobb will service pension and executive compensation issues.
• Real Estate One announced the addition of five new sales associates to their Ann Arbor office: Tina Smalley, Denise McMurray, Pander Kimbrough, Louis Johnson and Linda Schaner. Additionally, Carolyn Chandler Roopas has rejoined the Ann Arbor office after taking a leave of absence.
• The Washtenaw Home Builders Association Foundation, the charitable arm of the Builders & Remodelers Association of Greater Ann Arbor has made their community service donations to area housing-related charities. The recipients chosen were the Salvation Army Festive Affair, Jewish Family Services, Community Action Network, Neighborhood Senior Services and the Washtenaw Remodelers Council. The donations are made possible through the contributions of members of the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Ann Arbor and foundation fund-raising activities.
• On Nov. 20, carmaker Hyundai unveiled a new four-cylinder engine at its Hyundai America Technical Center in Superior Township, where it engineers, designs, tests and certifies vehicles sold in the U.S. The 2.4-liter Theta II GDI engine, to be used in the 2011 Sonata, features gasoline direct injection technology, using less fuel, creating fewer emissions and delivering improved throttle response, all while making more power than a traditional port-injected engine.
• Becton, Dickinson and Co. announced Nov. 20 the completion of its acquisition of HandyLab Inc., an Ann Arbor-based company that develops and manufactures molecular diagnostic assays and automation platforms.
• Advanced Photonix Inc., based in Ann Arbor, will participate in the second annual LD Micro Conference to be held Dec. 3 at Luxe Sunset Bel Air in Los Angeles, Calif. API's Chairman and CEO, Rick Kurtz, will make a presentation at 4 p.m. Management will also participate in a question and answer session following the presentation and one-on-one meetings throughout the day.
• Ann Arbor-based Borders Group Inc. appointed Bill Dandy senior vice president of marketing, effective Nov. 20. In related news, Borders announced Nov. 18 that the company will be the exclusive book retailer for the RomCon Annual Romance Readers' Conference, a national conference for romance readers slated for July 9-11, 2010 in Denver, Colo.
• Ann Arbor SPARK celebrated the conclusion of its 16th Entrepreneur Boot Camp program with participant investor pitches and a reception Nov. 18. At the Ann Arbor SPARK Boot Camp Celebration, Current Motor Co. was selected as the "Best of Boot Camp" winner, based on the quality of its investor pitch and business plan. Current is an Ann Arbor-based electric vehicle manufacturer, formed in 2008, that builds all-electric motor scooters aimed at urban and suburban commuters.
