Ed Helms in "Cedar Rapids"

"Cedar Rapids" — upcoming movie comedy that shot in the Ann Arbor area for seven weeks late last year — has released an online trailer.

Ed Helms stars as an insurance agent who's spent his life isolated in his small town, until he gets into adventures during a convention in the "big city" of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The impressive cast also includes John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, Kurtwood Smith, Rob Corddry and Stephen Root. Miguel Arteta ("Youth in Revolt") is the director.

It's a big day for "Cedar Rapids"-related news. In today's "Cinema Chat" column, Russ Collins, CEO of the Michigan Theater, announced that the Michigan will host a special premiere screening of "Cedar Rapids" on Jan. 28, as part of the theater's involvement in the Sundance Film Festival USA program.

A presale for "Cedar Rapids" tickets (and a series pass to Sundance USA programming at the Michigan) is currently under way for Michigan Theater members. Reserved tickets for the "Cedar Rapids" screening and series passes go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29 at ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations and by phone at 800-745-3000. (Tickets to "Win Win" starring Paul Giamatti, the other Sundance premiere at the Michigan, are already on sale via the same sources.) For updated information about Sundance Film Festival USA visit www.michtheater.org/sffusa.

"Cedar Rapids" has been tentatively scheduled for a limited national release in February.

I met Ed Helms at the Clarion in A2 while they were filming this. My sister and I had to wait to check out while they finished filming a scene, and then he signed our receipt. He joked "I'm not paying for your stay!" We were bummed that we didn't think to have our pic taken with him via cellphone, but I'm not sure they would have let us do that, anyway. I suspect they only let us meet him because they felt bad that they made us wake up at 7am to move our car for the crew. I can't imagine they would have bugged Helms with every patron that checked out while they filmed (we didn't even ask to meet him--the lady checking us out suggested that we go get his autrograph). I can't wait to see this. The trailer looks great, and it's amazing what good cinematography can do to make a ho-hum hotel look like a ritzy party palace.
