Have questions for Ann Arbor area political candidates? Submit them by Friday to LWV

By Ryan J. Stanton

Still have questions you want answered by local candidates before the Aug. 7 primary? If so, the League of Women Voters in Ann Arbor wants to hear from you.

The league is taking suggestions for questions to be asked at the candidate forums it's holding on July 9 and 10.

President Nancy Schewe said members of the public have until Friday to submit questions in advance to lwv.ann.arbor.area@gmail.com.

That can include questions for candidates running for the Ann Arbor City Council, the 7th District seat on the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners, the 53rd District state House race, the 22nd Circuit Court judge seat or water resources commissioner.

The schedule for the LWV candidate forums is as follows:

Monday, July 9

  • 7-7:30 p.m. — State Representative, 53rd District
  • 8-8:30 p.m. — County Commissioner, District 7
  • 9-9:30 p.m. — County Water Resources Commissioner

Tuesday, July 10

  • 7-7:30 p.m. — Ann Arbor City Council, Wards 1 & 2
  • 8-8:30 p.m. — Ann Arbor City Council, Wards 4 & 5
  • 9-10 p.m. — 22nd Circuit Court Judges (non-incumbent)

The league is taping the forums at the CTN studios at 2805 South Industrial Highway on July 9 and 10. Limited seating is available at the studios. The forums will be rebroadcast until the day before the August primary election and can be viewed on the CTN website.

The city council debates used to be a half hour for each ward. This schedule puts 2 wards together so there is only 15 minutes for each ward. With all the time spent by LWV members explaining the process, there won't be much time for questions. Anyone know why the LWV shortened the time?

why in the world was my comment removed???...i was just correcting alber howard'ses and making his question more on-point, in the interest of lexical accuracy...something a2.com should applaud and encourage.

re my 'lexical accuracy' reference: i simply pointed out that the terms mr howard used are an example of the sad tendency nowadays for language to be grossly distorted in the service of partisan politics: e.g. "pro family"= dissing others' gay relatives" ; " pro-life'= overbreeding to the detriment of life on earth , and reproductive busybodiness etc etc.... as one who made a living with both words and facts i am unwilling to buy into the acceptance of such arrant abuse of language.

Do any of the candidates agree with The Mayor that the neighborhood flooding near West Park was the result of Global Warming and not because the City failed to oversee the company contracted for the 'renovation' project? (not making this up...).

State representative - the current retirement system for state employees is unsustainable as it is and is something nobody wants to tackle. What specifically do you plan to do to make it sustainable? Raise taxes? Cut spending? And how will that impact current and future retirees?
