“We want to have someone we can work with and respect. We’re not some run-of-the-mill, stick someone up there and hope for the best district.” - Ann Arbor school board President Deb Mexicotte, on the search for a new superintendent.

“We want a contract on Aug. 31. We want to be in the classroom when students arrive. We do not want a job action. That’s a last resort, but if it comes to that, we will take that step.” - Eastern Michigan University accounting professor Howard Bunsis on contract negotiations between the professors union and EMU.

“I think we are easy targets because we’re expendable. There are contracted services for us anywhere you go.” - union President Laurie Price, on talks to save the jobs of the school district’s custodians.

“Very simply, in cases where private profits and public interests are aligned, the idea of corporate social responsibility is irrelevant: Companies that simply do everything they can to boost profits will end up increasing social welfare.

“It hasn’t done anything. A quarterback has confidence, and I think we could win with any of us at quarterback.” U-M quarterback Tate Forcier, on a tumultuous off-season that has left him vying for the starting job this fall.
