Trial begins against man accused in fatal shooting in Superior Township

By Art Aisner

Jury selection is under way for a man charged in a fatal shooting outside a Superior Township apartment complex earlier this year.

Larry Hunter, 27, faces open murder charges in the Jan. 23 slaying of Jamar Gardner during an altercation outside the Sycamore Meadows apartment complex in the 8700 block of MacArthur Boulevard.

Hunter intends to use an alibi defense, per court records.

Co-defendants Marget Pittman and LaShawn Covington will be tried separately on assault charges next Monday.

Circuit Judge Archie Brown took a request to separate their trials under advisement at a pre-trial hearing last month and issued his ruling early this morning, court officials said.

Authorities claim Hunter shot Gardner during an argument that escalated into a physical fight. Gardner, 30 died at the scene.

Pittman, 35, and Covington, her 18-year-old son, were reportedly there and are each charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. Pittman is also charged with assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder.

They remain free after posting bond in February and April, respectively, court records show.

Hunter's trial is scheduled to last through the week.

Why don't they just build a big wall around MacArthur Blvd to keep the majority of Washtenaw County's criminals together and not let them infiltrate the rest of the county?
