Brady Hoke looked for toughness, character while recruiting; Rich Rodriguez felt Michigan had turned a corner and more

By Kaleb Roedel

Tuesday, the day before national signing day, Michigan football coach Brady Hoke appeared on WBBL 107.3, reported Angelique S. Chengelis of the Detroit News.

Hoke spoke on several topics, including the small window he had for recruiting.

Said Hoke: "(We tried) to identify guys who fit the profile for what we look for, guys with character, guys who have toughness, guys who understand the value of degree, guys who have passion to play the greatest game there is ... I think I was in 11 cities in five days last week ... It's all been very good for us."

Look boys and girls, if I have hurt any of you by my comments about our team I apologize but we must face the facts. We just hired a new coach that is unproven at best as a head coach at Mich. He has some background at small schools and as an assist. at Mich. His first year is going to be with a team that faces huge obstacles in many different ways, we lost our back-up possible starter QB if DR goes down, We had a average at best recruiting class wouldn't matter anyway their freshmen, we're changing our whole profile which will be like starting over and on top of that we got Nebraska coming to town followed by ohio state and thats if we survive Iowa and Michigan state and Notre Dame. My point is we're tredding water barely keeping our heads above water and to brag and I use that term lightly about every aspect of our transition is setting us up for big disappointment both this year and 2012. I like truth and the truth here is maybe, just maybe in the not to distant future if Mich fans(alum) support this new coach and team and don't back stab him if he falls short of expectations the next 2or3 years we might see the light of day at least in the big 10. This big ten right now for us 2011 will be murder and on the national stage the big 10 is a joke so, try to remember what an uphill battle our new coach is facing and let's not get ahead of ourselves after all, "We are Michigan".

Look boys and girls, we're a lousy team at best, no fault of Brady and we probably would have been markedly improved had RR stayed, hell we couldn't help but be better. We have a second rate recruiting class with average at best talent with a couple exceptions. If Brady can stick around 3-5 years we should improve at least in the big 10. I'm not greatly impressed with Brady Hoke that might change in the future if I was to rate him now before he's head coached a game at Mich. I would rate him average to decent again, that opinion can change once we see what he can do with what he's got.

We turned the corner when we tossed out the Spread and he who must not be named.

Hoke said exactly what everyone who has been paying any attention to the program knew he would say. I can't imagine him saying "I was looking for warm bodies with at least three stars to fill out positional needs for this class," even if that is what he was doing. I'll give Hoke an A+ for keeping this class together, but the class itself will probably be closer to a C. Since the alternative would have been for the class to fall apart and be an F, there is a huge net gain here. We won't really know what Hoke is capable of until next year's projected Ohio-heavy class.

D21 I lived outside Eugene at one time. I was in a sports bar around New Years 2000 talking with this kid that wrestled for the ducks and we chatted football. I mentioned I came from Mich and Ann Arbor and he looked at me in amazement and said something like oh, we're not in their class and I said something like ya, but you guys are starting to improve. I thought about that conversation during the BCS game. I hope that kid does well in Oregon but fact is Mich is in a class all by itself and will return to prominence. We've got to stick with one coach and I don't care if Brady Hoke doesn't even break even the next 2 years we've got to stick with this guy and I'll tell you something else this experiment with RR could be a blessing in disguise for the whole Mich. program. You know the old saying, "I see the glass half full". Mich. experianced the spread and the damage that offense can do with a mobile QB and team speed. I would hope that Brady didn't miss the films on Mich. offense the last couple of years and he incorporates some of that in his scheme.

Ya Dusty I like that," cutesy" Oregon high flying team concept. Ya, I just can't wait to go back to the history books of our offense. The next time Oregon flys into Mich. and plays us at the Big House they can destroy what's left of Mich. dignity with that Duck, "Cutesy" team.

And to top it off, the senior-laden offense, jam-packed with NFL talent, couldn't score more than 7 on Oregon's "smoke and mirrors" defense. But hey, keep drinking the "WE'RE GONNA BE TOUGH AND ACCOUNTABLE" kool-aid. Toughness and accountability never won a football game.

And let's not forget the last time Michigan thought they had a good defense and they played Oregon and their "cutesy" offense... yeah... and that offense wasn't even as good as their offense is now.

I love how you old men call Oregon's offense "cutesy". My grandfather says the same thing. Then again, he wonders why nobody runs the wishbone anymore.

Not caring too much about losing Fisher, something tells me he's not tough enough for smash mouth. Sounds like he wants to play in a cutesy Offense. Maybe we'll see you in the Rose Bowl one day Jake, then you'll see what you missed out on.

Yes, it should lessen as time go by. At least it is better than losing in state recruits to other B1G opponents (Zettel 2 PSU).

It is sad to see many in-state recruits choosing out-of-state schools in a year when the state of Michigan is among the top recruiting battlegrounds.

Gotta hand it to you, D21. (The King and I actually recorded your version of the Groban song that you posted on the other thread. Hoke says he'll play it in the locker room before the wmu game). Again, I hate to rain on y'alls parade but today needs to REALLY be signing day. By that, I mean we need to have some rich boosters SIGNING checks over to 5-star guys. Don't kid yourselves. We need to play the game. SEC schools do it. osu does it. We have to compete. The King, Hoke, Hayden Fox, etc. none of it matters if there's not a level playing field.

Don't know if you're kidding. I'll assume you're not. The ONLY thing that matters is doing it by the rules. Interesting lesson for your kids (if you have any, Theo). Good Night and Good Luck

Whatshisname thought we had turned a corner? Judged by the worst-ever-bowl-loss in Michigan history at the hands of the 5th place team in the SEC West, we had turned a corner . . . . into a dark alley where we got mugged by a 2nd grader. Thank GOD he is gone. Good Night and Good Luck

Accountability, hmm, what a concept. Hoke's players are always going to lay it on the line for him. Because they will respect and care for him because he will care about them and their parents will know their child is in good hands. These are the most important things in life, after that, everything takes care of it self. When you know someone has your back, your loyalty for them is so powerful, we've all felt that at some point in our lives, it's no big secret and it's not that complicated. Good luck on NSD U-M, Go Blue!!!

Good Mick, that was really good you almost had me in tears until I realized you were pulling my leg. I especially liked that part of, " Their parents will know their child is in good hands". I'm especially going to think about,"their child" when they meet up with Nebraska and ohio state, good stuff Mick.

RR couldn't even spell "accountability" correctly if you had spotted him "a-c-c-o-u-n-t-a-b-i-l-i-t-y"
