Editor's note: This is the last installment of our golf advice column for this season. Thanks for reading and hopefully your game is better for it.

One of the greatest aspects of the Memorial week is the players clinic before competition. Jack Nicklaus, the tournament host, has some of the top tour talents expose their secrets in how they go about playing the game at such a high level.

Golf advice columns:
So as we sat and watched this elite exhibition unfold in front of our very eyes last weekend, we only think, ‘hmmm...wonder if I can do that?’

The swing of a PGA Tour player has a certain look to it. The swing is clean, simple and appears to be effortless in power. Hey Jack...teach me that! It’s a lot easier than you might think.

Golfers often wonder how and why tour player's swings look so effortless, be it the fluid motion of Ernie Els and Fred Couples, the rhythm and timing of the late Payne Stewart or the power of Davis Love. For the rest of us, we are tormented and ridden with patchwork of moving parts, compensations and the greatest swing killer of all, tension.

So, how can you make your swing look like ones you envy on TV? Here’s a couple pointers:

  1. Be efficient: Perhaps the biggest difference between the grace of Steve Elkington and we mere mortals is the level of efficiency in the swing. A player has an efficient swing when the body parts and club only move in ways that help to promote solid shots. Changes in posture like a reverse pivot of the spine at the top of the swing, flipping the hands at the bottom of the swing instead of rotating the body and dancing feet while swinging are often the major contributors to poor efficiency. Try to reduce all of these factors, and you swing efficiency will increase.
  2. Spine alignment: Changing the spinal position during the swing is grounds for destruction. Look at Jim Furyk or Freddie Jacobson, probably the most discussed unconventional swings on tour, but their spine position is solid. They are rotational - not convoluted with tilts, dipping, swaying and lifting - it just turns. As if somebody drove a stake right through the middle of their spine at address and are forced to swing around it.
  3. Tempo: Lee Trevino may talk fast, but his swing tempo is slow and smooth. Nick Price talks and walks like a panicked jumping baitfish, but his tempo is regarded best on tour. Tempo is the pace in which the club move in sequential rhythm of the swing. When the hands get quick, the arms lift and separate from the body causing poor rotation and from there, it is a mess to get back to impact. Find your tempo and go with it, be it low and smooth or paced and rhythmic like Trevino and Price.

Try these tips on the course your next time out. Remember, the players on TV all have that easy look to their swings because of just a few simple key components…and hours and hours of practice.

Incorporate them into your game this summer and enjoy playing some really great golf. Contact your local golf professional and have them assist you in discovering how to swing more like the guys on TV.

Thanks for the tips this spring Kyle. I've tried to put some of them into practice. Here's a video of my swing from this past weekend, feel free to pass along any critiques! http://bit.ly/14FeEvG

That's some nice action! Burn that image in your mind of the swing and keep it going all summer long.
