'Beat Pete' comes to a close for the season, but Saline and Father Gabriel Richard forge on

By Pete Cunningham

Saline wide receiver Gage Hammond has been Mr. Everything for the 10-1 Hornets.

With only two Washtenaw County teams remaining in the MHSAA high school football playoffs, the high school football “Beat Pete” pick ‘em contest has officially come to a close for the 2012 season.

Dry those tears everyone. As many a sap have written in high school yearbooks through the years: Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened. Over the past 11 weeks 540 times the readers have “Beat Pete”, including 17 last week who had to be perfect to beat my 3-1 picks record. As I’ve been reminded of many times over the past 11 weeks, perfection is never outside the realm of possibility when dealing with you, the all knowing readers.

Be sure to check out Kyle Austin’s previews of Saline’s matchup against defending Division 1 state champion Detroit Cass Tech and Father Gabriel Richard’s game against undefeated River Rouge and vote in’s interactive polls to weigh in on who you think will win.

Both are home games and being played on different days (Saline at 7 p.m. on Friday, Richard at 1 p.m. on Saturday), so be sure to go out and support the local teams and vote in our online interactive polls at

Thanks for another great season everyone. See you on the hardwood!

Hey Pete thanks for the fun this year. Maybe next year we could get the developers at or to create us a "pick em" style page that could track wins/losses for the season? I'm not holding my breath, but that would be awesome. Go Saline, Go Gabriel Richard and GO Grass Lake!
