Chelsea and Manchester win district openers and more playoff basketball results

Class A District at Monroe High School

Bedford 50, Milan 7

Temperance Bedford led 16-1 after the first quarter and 22-1 at halftime to earn a win in its Class A district opener at Monroe High School.

Bedford’s Rachel Lewandowski led all scorers with 10 points. Nine Bedford players scored at least two points in the game.

Bedford (15-5) will play Monroe, which had a first-round bye, in the district semifinal on Wednesday. The two teams met twice in the regular season, and Bedford won both meetings.

“I think it's going to be a real battle,” Bedford coach Billy Ryan said. “They have a strong senior core, so they won't go down without a fight.”

Jessica Hagan scored three points for Milan (2-19).

"I think we had a really great group of girls,” Milan coach Brad Baden said. “I have to say that they were even better to work with than I thought. They really impressed me with their effort, desire, and poise.”

Class B District at Onsted High School

Chelsea 54, Stockbridge 43

The Chelsea (14-6) offense oppened up in the second quarter, outscoring Stockbridge 17-8, giving the Bulldogs a 12 point lead at halftime.

Grace Sauers scored a game-high 17 points to lead Chelsea, going 11 for 17 from the free-throw line; Riley Singleton added 14 points.

"In the second quarter we were really able to take control of the game," Chelsea coach Tood Blomquist said. "We we able to force them to just one shot."

By the third quarter, Chelsea had amassed a 19 point lead, but Stockbridge did not quit; by making some 3-pointers the Panthers closed the gap to eight points.

Kelsey Crockett scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Stockbridge (7-14) and Tara Hall also added 15 points.

Chelsea will move forward in the district tournament to face Napoleon (16-4).

Blomquist will have his team examining film to prepare for the game, and hopes to execute the team's game plan as well as possible.

Class C district at Manchester High School

Manchester 56, Greenhills 25

Manchester's Taylor Manders scored the first four points of the game, recording her 1,000th career point on the second basket. The senior ended the night with a team-best 14 points and four assists in the win for the Lady Dutch (20-1).

Along with McKenna Erkfritz, Manders is the second Manchester player to reach the milestone this season.

Erkfritz contributed 13 points and eight rebounds, and Sarah Thompson had eight points and six steals. Manchester recorded 25 steals as a team.

"We jumped out to a quick lead and applied a lot of pressure," Manchester coach Cori Kastel said. "Between Taylor and McKenna, our guards put a lot of pressure on them and forced a lot of turnovers."

For Ann Arbor Greenhills (11-8), Jackie Oestreich totaled 17 points. Manchester advances to play Willow Run on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Clinton 40, Whitmore Lake 31
District Bracket

Clinton (8-13) advances to play Arbor Prep (16-4) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Class D district at Washtenaw Christian High School

Washtenaw Christian 34, Calvary Christian 15

Rachel Ballantyne had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Michaela Donat added 10 points, in Saline Washtenaw Christian's opening round district win.

Courtney Bryant led Calvary Christian with seven points.

“They've (Calvary Christian) got a young team over there, so we put a little pressure on them and were fortunate enough to get a couple buckets on them,” Washtenaw Christian coach Bob Trevino said. “We challenged Rachel to have a good game and she responded.”

Washtenaw Christian (11-6) advances to the district semifinal against Monroe Meadow Montessori at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams played once during the regular season, and Washtenaw Christian prevailed 39-12
