Birmingham Seaholm 24, Pioneer 0
Stats not available

Pioneer was shutout for just the second time since 2006 on Thursday as it dropped its season opener to Birmingham Seaholm, 24-0.

"I think we were our own worst enemy tonight. We made some mental mistakes and a lot of errors on our part," said first-year coach Jari Brown. "(Birmingham Seaholm) is a solid team, and we made too many mistakes that cost us."

Both Seaholm and Pioneer were playoff teams in 2012, though Pioneer didn't look the part on Thursday. Pioneer allowed two touchdowns on special teams, one on a blocked punt and another on a muffed punt.

"We made too many mistakes that cost us," Brown said. "We have to do a good job of using this as a learning experience, and focus on next week and not this week."

Pioneer plays at Dearborn Edsel Ford next Friday.

Fowlerville 17, Dexter 10

Trailing 14-0 at the half, quarterback Kyle Koenig led Dexter to 10 third-quarter points to get the Dreadnaughts back in the game, but in the end Dexter dropped its season opener to host Fowlerville 17-10 on Thursday.

Koenig, who finished 11 for 21 with 153 yards, completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Cole Rize to spark Dexter's third-quarter rally, which also included a 14-yard field goal by Evan Burke.

Erik Leon led Dexter with 66 yards rushing on 16 carries, and Adam Haas caught three passes for 65 yards to lead Dreadnaught receivers.

Chris Bryson made 11 tackles to lead Dexter defensively, and Haas intercepted a pass.

"Our defense played pretty well and got us some big spots, but penalties and turnovers kept us from taking advantage," Dexter coach Ken Koenig.

Father Gabriel Richard 25, Lake Fenton 13

Matt Johnson scored two touchdowns to lead Ann Arbor Gabriel to a 25-13 win Thursday over visiting Lake Fenton.

The offense was able to hold Lake Fenton to just eight plays from scrimmage in the first half, thanks in large part to two successful onside kicks in the second quarter.

“They impressed me a ton,” Gabriel Richard coach Brian Lemons said. “They definitely exceeded expectations with the young group that we have.”

Can we get an update on how the Ypsilanti Grizzlies did? It would be nice to see how the new school started its season.
