Les Miles, Michigan AD Dave Brandon met Monday; Miles the only choice to replace Rich Rodriguez? and more

By Kaleb Roedel

Apparently, LSU's Les Miles and Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon -- despite multiple reports the two were meeting today in Ann Arbor -- met Monday in Baton Rouge.

Brandon's returning plane ride didn't include an extra passenger in Miles, but clearly the wheels to bring the current LSU coach back to Michigan are in motion.

Reported ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg late Monday night, "A source tells colleague Joe Schad that if offered the Michigan job, Miles would accept. Michigan is willing to ante up for its next coach, and Miles could expect an offer of more than $4 million a year."

What did you people think? Just because you're the great and powerful UM,that you'd simply snap your fingers and your dream coach would magically appear? Fact is,coaches are not running all over each other to be UM's next sacrificial lamb, you no longer yield that type of power.I remember Taters and Theo's promises 3 years ago.We will win multiple Big Ten championships with RR.We will win multiple NC'S with RR,SPEED,SPEED,SPEED.Oh,and lets not forget the so called Barwis effect you guys trumpeted for weeks on end.Blah, blah, blah freekin' blah.Hows that crow tasting now gentlemen?

Miles has a very difficult decision to make, if in fact he's been offered the job as most sources seem to be saying. He's supposed to have a VERY good team coming back next year, is generally liked quite a bit in Baton Rouge, has kids in school there who would need to be uprooted, and a bit of a mess to fix at Michigan with recruiting, defense, and special teams. And I'm guessing LSU will try VERY HARD to keep him there. So don't be surprised if he stays put too. However, IF he does come here, Michigan will need to assign a whole staff of compliance people to make sure he lives up to Michigan standards. Recruiting in the SEC is a much more competitive, anything-goes environment that Miles has become very good at. Still, this is one area he can really help Michigan now - to stop the talent erosion before it becomes ultra hard to fix like our basketball program has run into.

A lot of you are trying to make comparisons between Bo and this coach and that coach. It is my opinion that you will never be satisfied with that ideal. First of all Bo was old school, I know what that means because my father was the same age as Bo and things that came out of my fathers mouth sounded as if he and Bo came from the same mold, probably did. That mold that these ol boys came from was broken long ago. It is my opinion when I remember back that Bo first took the job and then agreed to the money. Michigan fans need to make up their minds what it is that they want here, is it a national champion, a big ten winner or is it integrity first? From what I see most fans just want to win and they are putting integrity second. I can't speak for any of you only you truly know your own minds. If your looking for a win at all cost coach then you will have to take the baggage that comes with it. When we get our new coach let's support him loudly but let's also let him know we want things done right and we will accept nothing less win or lose.

Beyond the extra money, what would Miles gain by moving to Michigan? He would be playing in a conference that is not as good or as exciting as the SEC, unfortunately, and would be in a deficit position in terms of recruiting. Not to mention having to live in SE Michigan vs a warmer place and great recruiting area. After all I have read on various website, the Michigan job isn't all that desirable any longer among elite coaches. Think of the RR legacy that will need to be overcome, an empty set of offices where those assistants used to sit, and a very divided fan base. From what I've seen of LM in interviews, he isn't a starched "blue blazer" type of guy. Is he going to fit in at Michigan if offered (and he accepts) the job?

Other than a few jabs at Theo and Tater, I have sort of observed the past month from the sidelines. I do have one curious observation. After a lifetime of hearing that The University of Michigan is the Leaders and The Best, are they really??? Rather than develope a coach in house and promote from within. Or going out and beating the bush and finding the next great talent. The great Blue university, it appears, has once again sunk to the levels of the other money grubbing football powers of the world and will now steal a big name coach from another school. The one place where character and morals have always been higher than the rest of the world has fallen by the wayside. It is a damn good thing that this was not the way Canham went about finding a coach. Schembechler would never have made the grade. He would have had to coach a few years at a major university before being stolen away by Michigan. I guess if the goals are to compete and beat the SEC, then you need to follow the practices of the SEC. I personally believe that when you dangle a few million more in front of a guy that is already making millions and under contract...well, you get a RichRod type. I want to see Michigan return to greatness, but I don't believe that this is the correct way to go about it. Frieder was run off, and his name is mud around here (not a Michigan Man, even though he graduated from Michigan) but we will go out and buy a Michigan Man.

I have to disagree with Bragg on this being a "disaster" if DB doesn't get LM as the new HC. (talk about alphabet soup) If you rated the top 5 candidates based on experience, success, recruiting, and intangibles the top two coaches would have been JH and LM. JH didn't work out but it wasn't from lack of effort on DB's part. It takes two parties to come to an agreement and JH wanted the pros, the left coast, and possibly, a happy wife. More bowl games to be played, have to wait those out, and then move to number 2. LM has a history of wanting to coach at UM again, wants to stay at the college level, and possibly, a wife that wants to make her husband happy, and supports his dream to come back to Michigan. DB knows he can get BH almost anytime with a phone call but ANYONE looking at their career records, bowl wins, conference w/l, and intangibles has to see that LM is the better selection. So DB has done his job, he gets the best coach available on his list, and is fairly secure in his, and our, choice. BH is a good coach with a great upside, and to be honest, I would have loved it if he had been given a shot. But that selection had risks and after the last 3 years DB has to limit those, so LM is the pick. @D21 I understand your mind and know you have reservations about LM. I certainly respect your opinion but if you look at EVERYTHING and what is needed at UM right now, LM brings more to the table than any other available coach. So look at the numbers, use that brain, make the decision from the head and not the heart and you will get there. Comparing RR to BH, it is BH. Bad coach to very good coach. Do the same with BH to LM and, although a much better dynamic, LM has more success over a longer period in a tougher conference vs higher competition. DB go get our new HC for the University of Michigan football program, Les Miles. Welcome back, Coach!

The ONLY reason Miles would come to Michigan is EGO. He's at a major FB power. He's in a good recruiting region. He's in a warm climate. He's making tons of money. He's already won a natl. championship. He's beat Tressel and the Buckeyes. What's left? Return to Michigan, save the FB program and surpass Bo as UM's legenary coach. Of course, if he fails, he still will have all the cash Blue is going to give him.

Theo, I bet you were glad there was no defense in the NC game last night, since "defense is stupid" and isn't necessary to win.

Miles is a done deal. He will be introduced to fans at OSU Michigan BB game and most likely will reference OSU game in his comments like the vest did when introduced to fans at BB game 10 years ago. Theo wherever your king land aka crybaby it is OK for you to be their fan.

I'm disappointed that the hometown media source is relegated to just passing information on from other sources. This goes back to the A2 News days and the string of Tomaselli, Carty, and most recently Birkett who were hellbent on digging up dirt and did not foster the type of relationships and sources within the Athletic Dept. to provide credible reporting.

Looks like it may be a done deal, although I'm not believing anything until there's a press conference to prove it.
