MIDLAND -- Sometimes pressure isn't all bad.

And no one found that out better than a pair of Pioneer High School girls' doubles tennis teams.

Both Pioneer's No. 3 doubles tandem of Anna Borowicz and Sarah Court and the No. 4 pair of Alyssa Roopas and Evie Van DeWege fell behind and had uphill battles Saturday.

But in the end, all four left the Midland Community Tennis Center with Division 1 state championship medals.

"Starting out, everything was a little overwhelming," Court said. "But once we got going, we just blocked it out.

"We just went one point at a time."

After falling behind in the first set, Borowicz and Court pulled together to do what they've done best all season: Adapt and overcome.

The junior tandem capped off a perfect season by scoring a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Grosse Pointe South's Ginny Hayden and Clare Brennan.

"I'm just so happy," an emotional Borowicz said. "We worked so hard this season, and we just got through it."

The state championship is the second for Borowicz, who earned a No. 4 doubles title a year ago with classmate Shreya Bahl.

"Obviously last season's title was sweet, but this one was sweeter," Borowicz said.

Mainly because of the journey the duo endured to finish it off.

Court was making her varsity debut this season, while Borowicz had to adjust to playing at the net -- something she hadn't done before in doubles competition.

But just like Saturday's final, the pair found a way through it all.

One point at a time.

"We just played our game, we played hard," Borowicz said. "We had a few struggles here and there, but we fought through it."

SUPER SATURDAY

Saturday was one of the busiest days on the high school sports calendar. A roundup of Washtenaw County results:

Poll: Vote for the top individual performance

D1 track finals: Training partners Cindy Ofili (Huron), Drake Johnson (Pioneer) shine; Ypsilanti sprinter Austin Sanders wins twice

Track roundup: Bryce Bradley wins 3,200 state title, leads Chelsea to 3rd place at D2 final

Tennis roundup: Greenhills' Kasey Gardiner, Colleen O'Brien sweep top spots at D4 finals

Water polo finals: Skyline tops Dexter in consolation game; Huron seventh

Girls lacrosse regional: Pioneer holds off Huron to advance to state semifinals

Soccer districts: Saline, Dexter, Father Gabriel Richard win girls soccer district titles

Baseball/softball districts: 4 county baseball teams claim titles, Milan lone softball winner

Things were equally intense for Roopas and Van DeWege in their title match.

After battling through a grueling three-set win over Huron's Hannah Gadway and Saule Tamkus in the semifinals, Roopas and Van DeWege found themselves in a hole again early after dropping the first set against Grosse Pointe South's Kate Krueger and Katherine Haiso in the title match.

But, like their teammates earlier in the day, they found a way to forge ahead.

"We needed to fight," Roopas said. "We weren't going to let up at all. We had to fight for our team."

Ironically, Van DeWege said the rough start to the match may have been the reason for the triumphant finish -- as the pair loosened up in the second set, eventually winning a tiebreaker to force a third.

From there, it was gravy -- as Pioneer held on for a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 championship win.

"You hear everyone say, 'Oh, people have been down before (and still won),'" Van DeWege said. "But we just had to fight back. We weren't going to give up."

Pioneer finished fourth in the team standings with 22 points, four behind state champion Grosse Pointe South.

Huron ended the day in fourth place with 16 points, while Saline netted 15 points. (Complete results)

In other doubles action, Pioneer's No. 1 team of Alexa Arvidson and Julia Rampton had their season end in the semifinals, as did Pioneer's No. 2 team of Gina Chou and Allison Fitzpatrick.

Saline's Mary Hanna saw her quest for a No. 1 singles crown end in the semifinals to eventual state champion Davina Nguyen of Utica. Fellow Hornets Jennifer Ho and Heather Vogt also fell in the semifinal round in No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

Huron's Catherine Chou advanced to the semis in No. 4 singles before falling to the state runner up, Midland Dow's Allie Vickery.

So happy for those doubles STATE CHAMPIONS. The beauty of this is that all of those girls are really nice, smart, young ladies. Their parents should be really proud. I know their math teacher is.
