Former Michigan QB Tate Forcier reportedly finds a new home: San Jose State

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The long and winding road that Tate Forcier has followed since leaving the Michigan football program has reportedly ended in San Jose.

The San Jose Mercury News reported late Tuesday night that Forcier has decided to transfer to San Jose State. He'll sit out one season due to NCAA transfer rules and have two years of eligibility remaining starting in 2012.

Former Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier has reportedly found a new home at San Jose State.

After starting all 12 games as a freshman at Michigan in 2009, Forcier was a backup to Denard Robinson in 2010. He was ruled academically ineligible before the 2011 Gator Bowl.

Forcier announced in February that he was transferring to Miami (Fla.) before deciding that Miami was too far away from his San Diego home.

In May, he listed Auburn, Kansas State, Montana, USC, San Diego State and San Diego as possible landing spots.

Earlier this month, the continuing courtship by schools included Hawaii, which was in search of quarterback help for 2012 because it loses two fifth-year seniors after this season. However, Hawaii reportedly started looking elsewhere when Forcier did not project to meet the requirements to join the Warriors in the fall semester.

Off the field, Forcier was involved in a bizarre incident in Grand Rapids in April. A woman called police when Forcier locked himself in a bedroom and was hanging from a third-story window.

The Mercury News reports that Forcier took online classes this summer to become academically eligible and that he will enroll at San Jose State for the fall semester. He will report to training camp next week.

The newspaper also reported that Forcier's brother, Jason, who played at both Michigan and Stanford, currently works close to the San Jose State campus.

The Spartans were 1-12 last season and 0-8 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Tate is more poster child than casualty. As far as the abyss, it's like the recession - you don't know it's over until things improve. I'm still waiting for on-the-field results.

I wish him the best. Hopefully he will get his act together in and out of the classroom.

I will ask again, why, why, why do you keep following and writing about this guy? It defies common sense and logic to subject your readers to continual dribble about this guy. Your resources, staff or whatever you want to call it should focus on the athletes that have represented and currently represent the UM with class and integrity. Why not a story about a walk-on football player or an athlete in a non-scholarship sport? No, you keep giving us stuff on a guy that showed promise but could not deal with the situation. Your priorities need to be checked.

@liekkio and @friend12...Trust me, I do not read this dribble. All I see is the header and it tees me off. Far too many athletes on this campus and others that have gone on to do great things in society that get no recognition. Support those that stay whether a champion or not.

The answer is he has great potential and did some great things at UM. That puts him above a walk-on. His classroom issues and off campus activiies keep him in the news. You wouldn't be making a post if you hadn't read this story. One more thing, in a Hoke offense he would actually be a better fir than Robinson.

I think it's kind of sad that he can't seem to cut the apron strings and do what's best for him. He had great opportunites and no small amount of talent, but he feels the need to be close to home.

Sorry a2lover, but I take issue with your statement In my opinion There is a climate in the Forcier family that does not produce the integrity to stick it out. They have groomed three Q-backs and all three have transfered schools and all three will not play in the pros. They jump and run to seemingly greener pastures. Hanging out a 3rd story window is not Rich-Rod's fault. That falls on Tate and Tate alone. Jason played at U of M and transfered, who was responsible for that? Somewhere along in life we all have to be responsible for our own actions and and quit finding some-one else to hang our foibles on. There are always highs and lows in life. The trick is feeling comfortable in the middle, no matter what befalls us. I just don't believe the Forciers have figured that out yet.

Poor kid, I feel sorry for him. A victim of that horrible coach, Ric Rod. With better mentoring, personal advice and some tough love, he might well have been a viable quarter back. But with Rich Rod, who couldn't even keep himself out of trouble, Forcier didn't have a chance. Probably never come to much now, he seems to need a lot of counseling.

Yeah you're right - the parents should have nothing to do with it... and we certainly can't hold a 20 year old accountable for their actions - they can only vote and serve in the military.

He'll be thirty before he's lost eligibility if he just keeps transferring. What a new twist on football careers. Ingenious, Tate! Actually, I think he really doesn't like football - just the uniforms. Who's in for the pool on whether Forcier ever takes another snap in a football game?

TateWatch 2011 is over! Now we can get back to reading about football, and recruiting and things that matter to Michigan. Go Blue! Good luck Tate!

It was a good thing for U-M as well as Tate Forcier that he find a new school.
