Was Tim Biakabutuka's 313 yards Michigan's best individual performance against Ohio State?

By AnnArbor.com Staff

To coincide with today’s “Catching Up With …” story on former Michigan tailback Tim Biakabutuka, we ask the following question: What was the Wolverines’ best individual performance against Ohio State.

Our nominees, in alphabetical order:

Tim Biakabutuka (1995): Carried the ball 37 times for 313 yards in a 31-23 win over the previously-unbeaten Buckeyes. That effort remains the second-most single game rushing yards in Michigan history.

Tom Harmon (1940): Rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns, completed 11-of-12 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns, kicked four extra points and intercepted three passes in a 40-0 win.

Barry Pierson (1969): The new head coach at Whitmore Lake High School had three interceptions and set up a touchdown with a 61-yard punt return in a 24-12 win in Bo Schembechler’s first season as head coach.

Charles Woodson (1997): Sealed his Heisman Trophy and during a 20-14 win, intercepting a pass at the goal line, catching a pass that set up Michigan’s only offensive touchdown and returning a punt 78 yards for a score.

I was gonna pick Biakabatuka as a no-brainer, I mean, 313 yards is 313 yards...until I read what Tom Harmon did. 81wolverine has it exactly right, Harmon helped beat Ohio State on offense, defense and special teams. That game was 40-0...of which Harmon was directly responsible for 28 of them. If it was for the best performance in my lifetime, Biakabatuka would win in a landslide...but Harmon's stat line is just crazy.

Loka... Desmond caught one long bomb in that game that I remember it wasnt a TD but a long pass which changed field position.

watching the 69 game the other day on BTN again...Pearson's game was amazing he just seemed to be all over the field that day with the 3 picks and big returns and the punt return...amazing game... Woodson's game was great but he did get beat long for that one TD but we can excuse that one because he was so great... Biakabatuka's game was awesome especially since I was watching it at a bar in the heart of SEC country and everyone there was rooting for OSU for some reason lots of Michigan haters down there.... but i have to give the vote to Harmon...his stat line was amazing and he did have some pretty good offspring later in life...

Tough becasue trhey were such different times and teams. Tim's was an upset, with a true beat down, which is more impressive than a 40-0 slaughter. But of course Tom Harmon's stat line is crazy.

That's a really tough choice. In a close vote with Mr. Biakabatuka, I'd have to go with Tom Harmon's 1940 game. He did everything in that one except sell hot dogs at the stand outside.
