Retail Report: Spencer's Gifts to join Ann Arbor's Briarwood Mall in April
Briarwood Mall is already gearing to welcome Spring with new fashions, fresh looks, and at least one new store joining the mall's retail lineup.
Spencer’s Gifts is expected to open its new 1,932-square-foot location in April.
Spencer’s, whose first location opened over half a century ago in 1947, features inexpensive gifts in what they call an exciting, entertaining and unique store experience.
Its online store features gag gifts, bachelorette party goods, and a large selection of “romantic” gifts for adult shoppers.
The store's Briarwood home will be along the JC Penney corridor in what is now the location for the pop culture based fashion store, Hot Topic. According to the press release, Hot Topic will relocate in the north corridor near Sears and Chipotle to make room for the newest gift store.
Spencer’s Gifts is the 4th national store to come to Briarwood Mall in the last six months. Wet Seal, Pandora, and MC Sports all opened in time for the December holidays.
Briarwood Marketing Director Denise Murray says the changes make her optimistic.
“We love to see national stores coming in this speaks volumes about Ann Arbor and the economy.”
Spencer's Gifts' other nearby locations are in Wesland and Southland Mall.

I certainly agree with other comments that a Spencer store is not needed here in A2. It is an adult type store and I think it will attract teens or younger. What is Briarwood Mall going to anyway? No wonder I seldom shop there any more!

I think Spencer stores are very tacky and seem to locate in malls that are going down hill.

Why does Briarwood Mall find it necessary to bring in an ADULT type store? I am surprised that mall management has decided to go this direction. How Sad! Briarwood needs to keep the mall Family Friendly. There are plenty of places outside the mall where people can find Adult items. Keep Briarwood Mall CLEAN! However, there is something that Briarwood Mall does need and that is a FOOD COURT.

I have been in a Spencer's Gifts store and they are for ADULTS...(over 18) Parents, DO NOT bring in your teenagers or younger children. I saw kids this age looking at Adult (as in X rated) games, toys etc. Their parents were not supervising them properly. Also they have marijuana themed clothes and gangster t-shirts etc. The news of this store going in Briarwood really makes me NOT want to shop in this mall. It is getting trashier every year with these kinds of store going in there.

Yay! I think this is a great addition to Briarwood. It's a good place for gag gifts and a good laugh.
