Updates on 2009's locally shot movies: Don't get in line just yet

By Jenn McKee

Wondering what's happening with some of the films that brought Hollywood stars into our midst last year?

Though "Betty Anne Waters" was being filmed in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti last year at this time, there's still no sign of a trailer online, nor does there appear to be a tentative release date.

Given the film's big-name cast (Hilary Swank, Minnie Driver, Sam Rockwell, Juliette Lewis, and Peter Gallagher), and its uplifting, "based on a true story" tale (of a high school dropout single mom who goes to college and law school to get her brother's murder conviction overturned), my guess is that Fox Searchlight will keep the film under wraps until fall, or even until the Oscar-bait blitz that happens at the end of each year.

For those anxious for any little peek at the film, though, there are two still photos on the film's Internet Movie Database (IMDb) profile, including this one, which has all the earmarks of being shot in a University of Michigan library. Plus, an image that looks like it might an early version of the film's poster can be viewed on this Wild About Movies Web site page.

The next big film shoot that came to the area (Ypsilanti, specifically), "Stone" — starring Ed Norton, Robert DeNiro, and Milla Jovovich — had been tentatively slated for a May 7 release, but its IMDb status has been changed to a far more open-ended "2010." There's no official trailer available, but a rough cut, adults-only teaser, complete with brief nudity and adult language, is currently available on YouTube. Again, this preview is not appropriate for children (and it's vanished from the Internet in the past, so it might well be taken down in the near future).

Finally, Rob Reiner's "Flipped" — with Aidan Quinn, Rebecca DeMornay, Anthony Edwards, John Mahoney, and Penelope Ann Miller — has a listed release date of September 17, so we've got a while to wait for this one, too.

Filmed in the Ann Arbor area, including the Thurston prairie and Concordia University, and set in the late 1950s and early '60s, the movie tells the story of an offbeat young girl who has a crush on a boy who thinks she's weird, until adolescence makes things even more complicated. Here's a still from that film, since no trailer is yet available.

It will probably be 2011 before we see the results of the most recent shooting, "Cedar Rapids" and "Trust."
