Matt Wile may be the kicker the Michigan football team needs; Ohio State, Nebraska lead Big Ten recruiting and more

By Kaleb Roedel

It wouldn't take much, but kicker Matt Wile, who recently committed to the Michigan football team, hopes to turn the Wolverines' woeful kicking game around.

In an article by Mark Snyder of the Detroit Free Press, Snyder quotes Wile's San Diego Francis Parker High School coach, John Morrison:

"Matt has a huge leg, he can kickoff for them immediately, kick extra points and field goals immediately, and it wouldn't surprise me if he punted for Michigan someday."

@Mick I don't think Coach Hoke believes in waiting for luck. His staff has been working with this kid for a long time. I read somewhere that this might have been a case of Goudis seeing the writing on the wall when BH was named COACH and decided to head to Coral Gables. Wile is the 5th generation of his family to attend UM, which means soneone in his family watched the first coat of paint dry on campus, and that was going to be a hard habit to break. I'm glad he's coming to UM and let the competition for kicker begin. Depth would be nice. TiM Go Blue!

In case some of you folks don't realize it , Wile has been practicing without a tee for the past 2 yrs in anticipation of college ball. He's the real deal. I'm glad Goudis de-committed, he seemed fickle to me. Instead we got a kid who was THE Army All-American kicker and has a U-M heritage, and w/his size, if we need a tackle made on a broken play, he can possibly make it because he also played LB in high school. Again, we lucked out and got the right kicker. Go Blue!!!

He has done better then I thought he would. Seems he is recruiting somewhat undersized players? Seems he is recruiting for 3-3-5 base defense? A running QB? Great job getting this many near par commits in two weeks. At this rate he could fill this class.

Hey Rensational and Theo, this has to be the 1st time I've agreed w/Theo on anything and upvoted you buddy on your B-Ball comment. I've been posting on my discontent w/Beilein lately. Alot of teams have young squads, it's the nature of todays college ball. He's not getting the in-state stud big men, it's so frustrating. Trey McDonald considered us and wasn't offered and Amir Williams had us in his final 3 and they both chose OSU, why? It makes me sick to stomach. What is Coach B doing, or not doing better yet. I want us to be great in both sports, they go hand in hand with regards to recruiting. Go Blue!!

Can't wait to see this Wile kid kicking here. Of course, kicking in front of huge, noisy college crowds is a lot different than kicking off tees at sparsely attended Friday night H.S. games. Hopefully, he'll be able to adjust quickly. I hope he can consistently kick off into or through the endzone. It makes such a difference in field position when you have a kicker who can do that reliably. Some years back, we had Hayden Epstein (also from San Diego area) who always boomed his K.O.'s so they couldn't be returned. I'll just settle for keeping them in bounds all the time!

An article that I saw just before he signed said that he has been practicing his extra points without a tee and his kickoffs using the shorter tee for a number of years, so he sounds ready. TiM Go Blue!!!

The kicking game will be elevaed due to. 1) Players experience. (caried over from last year) 2) Inceased competition. 3) Great Coaching Staff. This year we should be 75% OR BETTER.

Since we're free associating here, how about the women's BB team? (Full disclosure, I've known Coach Borseth since the 5th grade, long story) Those of you close enough to show some support, go catch a game. Michigan plays at O state tomorrow, so get some cheese dip and tune in to the BTN. TiM Go Blue!

rensational You're right. Football is looking up, even if it's just the great job Coach Hoke and the new Michigan brain trust is doing relating to recruits and fans. The men's BB team is struggling. The question is what to do? I trusted DB to do the right thing about the football program. How do you think he did? Well, he looked around, saw Michigan needed to update it's BB facilities to improve recruitment and expand the scope and image of Michigan BB. I don't see quit, I sense disappointment. One coach was forced out due to him hving every resource a football program needs and he FAILED. Coach B doesn't and that's why DB is willing to wait.

Spot on, rensational. Very frustrating watching a Beilein game. Too often one guy has the ball up top and the other four guys are just STANDING THERE! Then one of them will somehow get open and fire up a prayer 3 as the shot clock buzzer sounds. IMO, not much different from the Amaker days. Watching hoopsters is a chore. He's still around, so bring back Orr!

Re: the article about those of us who have double-tortured ourselves over the past couple years by being loyal Michigan football AND Michigan basketball fans wanting Beilein out... Ugh. Gosh, Michigan finally sees the light and tosses RR after all the excuses, and now here we go again with those SAME excuses for Beilein and the basketball program. The sad part is Dave Brandon seems to buy the excuses for Beilein. I know this is mostly football readers/fans here, so I don't know if anyone is interested...but I've got to say (write) this: I didn't expect or want anything for Michigan bball this season except maybe the NIT. I know there are many young players on the team, and at times I see promise for making the NCAA Tourney in 2012. But Beilein has been here, what, 4 years? I'm not at all saying Michigan should be winning the Big Ten by now. I just think that it's becoming more and more obvious that his system, much like RR's, is not going to ever win Michigan the Big Ten and probably won't ever get Michigan out of the Big Ten bottom half (we were even 7th in the conference when we made the Tourney in '09). I also think it's getting more obvious that we were doing better with Amaker.

Seemingly already an improvement in recruiting but a long way to go to match Ohio State. Simce the vest as arrived they have been consistent in getting studs.

Like the rest of the returning players I feel that our kickers with benefit greatly by new and improved COACHING. If would be difficult, if not impossible, to honestly rate how good many of them truely are. So let's look to the spring as a time to review what Michigan already has and wait and see how this COACHING staff can make them better. There is one unavoidable fact: The lack of progress by certain position players was a result of bad teaching, not bad students of the game. My prediction for the most used quotes next fall, "Where was that guy last year? Wow, he can play!" TiM Go Blue!

Agree on that. Gibbons PAT in the bowl game were iffy, although they were both successful. I think these guys were afraid to fail. That said, neither of them had good kickoffs either - never/or rarely reached the end zone.

Agreed, I think that a lot of the problems Gibbons and Broekhuizen had were poor coaching. You don't suddenly forget how to kick a football between High School and college.
