Michigan defense Rich Rodriguez's undoing?; MSU's Mark Dantonio defends Rucker's reinstatement and more

By Kaleb Roedel

Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit News gave his thoughts on the Michigan football team's slump and Rich Rodriguez's future at U-M.

"If Michigan loses its final four games and finishes a bowl-less 5-7 again, Rodriguez would have to go," writes Wojnowski.
"Who knows if there's a safe victory total, but he's already precarious with a 4-16 Big Ten record, 13-19 overall in three seasons."

He later states, "
The Wolverines have to show improvement in the final month, and it can't just be from their dynamic quarterback."

Yel, Did Stonum get out of jail and play the next day? There is a difference there. With that said, let me make something clear. I love what Dantonio is doing at MSU. College football is at its best when MSU UofM and OSU are all good. Dantonio has state his intent to change the perception of MSU. Let's face facts and admit there has been a lot of players who have had trouble with the law whether it be drugs, theft, or assault. Then you have Dantonio come out and have a press conference about "zero tolorence." I have lost some respect for him after this. I'm one for second chances but this is Rucker's third now? As far as the standards of other programs, they are set by the school. Take Miami for example. They are considered the "bad boys" of college football. They have someone embrassed this title. For me its not about comparing one program to another. It's about claiming to be something you are not. Or if you are what you say you are, then this decision disagrees.

@P U MSU, OK. I'm using Stonum as a comparison. He didn't miss one day of activities, other than the days in jail. Which is actually different than Rucker. Rucker was suspended prior to going to jail, so he actually missed time outside of jail time. Again... my question, why should MSU players (and coaches for that matter) be held to a different punishment standard than other schools such as UM? No one has addressed that issue. Seems like a double standard.

If no one deserves a second chance, then why is Rich Rod still here? He has brought shame on UofM and WVU.If you are going to point the finger at people, be consistant.

Dantonio is a complete fail in his handling of the Rucker situation. Whereas you hate to see young men throw out into the world unprepared... How many chances do you give the kid? Simply solution. Kick him off the team. Allow him to keep his scholarship and an opportunity to get a degree. Problem solved.

boo hoo Tater. News flash for ya: There is no witch hunt when your coach goes 3-9, 5-7 and possible 5-7 or 6-6 at Michigan. He is what he is, which is a very very unsuccessful coach at Michigan, one of the best schools with plenty of resources for a coach to do well in.

Yel, It's the point of Rucking being in a jumpsuit to a uniform in 1 days time. Players make mistakes. Thats a given. If Rucker is a back-up and not NFL talent is this handled the same? Lets not kid ourselfs about what is going on here.

mlivesaline, In Winston's case. He punched a guy once (and was a menace to society). Probation for that. Now... he went and started another fight (to me not as menacing... but still a fight). He committed the exact same infraction. He deserved to be booted from the team. Now I'm not calling for Rucker's ouster, because the more I read and discover about it... the more I feel like it's a story for the media to build up to sell stories. The first issue was a fight. End's up it was a fight over a girl, and guys being embarrassed. You know what, at that age, I was in a fight over a girl. End's up, Rucker didn't even throw a punch in the fight. Second item, was completely unrelated to the first. He was trying to move his car from a 7-11 to a parking lot across the street so he could park it there all night. Was it stupid? Yes. Was he a menace to society... I hardly think so. So you know what... I stand corrected... things need to be looked at each time on an individual basis. I don't see hypocricy, but rather even at 40 I'm still learning. In much the same way, I haven't called for Stonum to be kicked off the team. I didn't call for Grady (older one) to be kicked off the team for two DUI's. If anything, your putting my post up even reinforces my position. Potato boy keeps bringing up Dantonio, but never will step up point out the short comings of his own Coach. It's been going on for months. Now if you believe that MSU players should be punished severely, while UM players should not be held accountable... I'll again ask about hypocricy. If you want to say, Dantonio as well as RR should both be held accountable for their actions... I will agree entirely with you, and change my stance. So... I really don't see hypocricy.

Yelmonian.. Didn't see where you were calling for Rucker to be kicked off the team. You seem to state that you would give a kid a second chance and then boot him. Well Rucker got his second chance and then went back to jail. And you're the one giving hypocrisy lessons? In case you forgot your post from July 21st of this year... Actually, you are hearing it from the Spartan crowd. There are certain people from the Potato Crowd that believe that all of MSU should be condemned forever, and bring this issue up during good articles regarding MSU. I personally have stated frequently, each kid deserves a second chance... and what he does with it is up to him. Winston blew it, and was booted. The swim kid from UM deserves a second chance. Now... this UM player blew his second chance. Is the Potato Man gonna step up and call for his ouster, or is hypocrisy going to reign supreme? I wouldn't have even commented, if the Tot hadn't made it his goal in life to bring up the Winston incident, once a week, for the last 10 months. If you have a complaint with the Spartans (myself included) coming over here and commenting... ask the Spud to refrain from visiting Spartan sites and spewing his same rhetoric. I wouldn't even have visited this site if it wasn't for the little fry.

Tater, On Rucker's suspension, I ask very simply... do you believe that MSU should follow the same standards as a school you support? If so, Dantonio has gone over the top in punishing Rucker. Enough said on the topic.

I'm new to this but are there any rules about commenters dealing with reality in their postings? T212 thinking that winning a game over Ron Zook justifies a six year contract extension reads like a plot from a "Twilight Zone" episode. Sure, I'd love a win this Saturday but what if we lose? Who's responsible should Michigan drop another conference game? Since when is winning about 20% of your Big Ten games become acceptable...at the University of Michigan? Rust? The only rust I've seen has accumulated over the last three football seasons. I doubt if there is enough oil, snake or otherwise, available to get this defense and special teams functioning properly this year. Theo CCXII there's an old saying: People are laughing with you or people are laughing at you. Which are you?

From the linked article, it talks about how RRod refuses to make changes to his defensive staff even though it's clear to anyone who's not on the sideline that the defense is well.. porous.. It goes on to further state that the buck stops at RRod's desk and he needs to take responsibility and quickly, if he hopes to remain the coach at Michigan past this season.
