The mega guide to Week 6: Michigan State at Michigan

By Rich Rezler

ASSOCIATED PRESS PREVIEW Still craving more? Here's a preview capsule from the Associated Press:

WHAT'S AT STAKE Michigan can solidify its return to relevance in the Big Ten after two down seasons, become bowl eligible for the first time since 2007 and help boost QB Denard Robinson's Heisman Trophy candidacy. Michigan State can validate itself as a legitimate conference contender and become perhaps the feel-good story of the season in the wake of coach Mark Dantonio's heart problems by earning a third straight victory over the Wolverines. Then there's the matter of in-state bragging rights and the Paul Bunyan Trophy. Other than that, not much to play for ...

KEY MATCHUP Michigan State RBs Le'Veon Bell and Edwin Baker vs. the Michigan defensive front. Although Robinson has been a one-man highlight reel for Michigan, that won't matter if the Wolverines can't stop anyone. They allowed 35 points last week to Indiana and 37 last month to UMass, and they'll have their hands full with the Spartans' talented running backs.

PLAYERS TO WATCH Michigan State: WR Keshawn Martin ran a punt back for a TD last weekend against Wisconsin. He's accounted for touchdowns in five different ways during his career — rushing, receiving, passing, on a punt return and on a kickoff return. The Spartans would love another big play on special teams to swing what figures to be a close game.

Michigan: Robinson leads the nation in rushing, is completing 70 percent of his passes and has already been Big Ten offensive player of the week three times. He scored the winning TD in the final seconds against Notre Dame and Indiana, and is averaging 9.2 yards per carry.

FACTS & FIGURES Dantonio is expected to be at the game after missing the last two following a mild heart attack Sept. 19. ... Three of the last six games in the series have gone to OT. ... Michigan State is trying to win three straight against Michigan for the first time since 1965-67. ... The Wolverines are second in the nation in total offense. ... Michigan has scored six touchdowns on drives of three plays or fewer. ... LB Greg Jones is on pace to become the second player to lead Michigan State in tackles four straight seasons.

AROUND THE BIG TEN The Michigan-Michigan State game is clearly the highlight of this week's Big Ten schedule. The rest of the games, which are previewed here, include:

Illinois (2-2, 0-1) at Penn State (3-2, 0-1), noon Indiana (3-1, 0-1) at Ohio State (5-0, 1-0), noon Minnesota (1-4, 0-1) at Wisconsin (4-1, 0-1), noon Purdue (2-2, 0-0) at Northwestern (5-0, 1-0), 7:30 p.m.

Scary statistic of the day: Late in the third quarter, Ben Chappell (he of the record-setting 480 yards against the 3-3-5 stack of you-know-what): 14-of-24 for 86 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. What does OSU know that Michigan doesn't?

Per the photo caption --- "The Paul Bunyan trophy, nearly dropped by Michigan State's Andrew Hawken after the Spartans' 26-20 overtime win last season in East Lansing, is arguably the least appealing thing about Saturday's rivalry game." I wholeheartedly disagree. This trophy represents a significant portion of this great state's history. Many graduates of our Michigan universities have historical ties into the lumber and forestry industries. That the game has a trophy based in the history and tradition of our great state of Michigan is leaps in "rivalry appeal" ahead of the sound bite trash talking that is pervasive in this 21st century world of "sportsmanship". GO BLUE!

Most people don't seem to remember this key piece of information, but it was not Mike that started the "little brother" comment. It was actually Caulcrik who said on the Friday before MSU lost, that he thought UM thought of Sparty as the "little brother". I also recall some MSU player saying something along the lines of "remember this as the day little brother beat big brother"... right before blowing the lead and losing. State fans keep bringing this up as though it is some evidence of UM arrogance, but really it's just a player who never lost to State throwing their own trash talk back in their face. Also, the "little sister" comments are just shameful - at least try to be original.

This Mich team is quite capable of losing big. They have won most games by a slim margin due to the offense keeping them in it until the end. This time, it's quite possibly a different outcome and the beginning of a long Big Ten season. MSU - 49 Mich 35

Since Richie Rod will send his "point a minute defense" out on the field AGAIN proving AGAIN that he doesn't know anything whatsoever about the game of football, the Spartans can be expected to cruise to victory by scoring at least 60 points against old blue's non-existent "defense".

Tater, Just wanted to make sure I understand correctly. UM beat MSU in a game in the '70s... due to that victory, it will have a bearing on how tomorrow's game plays out? Am I correct in your thought process? As a "delusional" fan you reference, I am greatly confused by your theory. Since history has shown that MSU wins about 1 out of 3 (per your statment), UM will win tomorrow. Based on your hypothesis, simple things such as offense, defense, special teams, and coaching have no bearing on the game, correct? Just UM shows up and wins 60%, correct? OK... I guess I'll live in my delusinal world. In my opinion (and I don't think I'm way out of line), I believe that if you ranked these 4 categories... Michigan gets the nod in the offense department, and MSU in the remaining departments. With that simple "delusional" thought process... I favor MSU. Your scientific... it was that way 30 years ago... so it must be that way now... is probably much more sound.

Well, the series record certainly does validate the Mike Hart comment about MSU being the little brother. Not to mention history tends to repeat itself over time. Even if Michigan doesn't pull out the victory tomorrow, it is certainly on the upswing and has the money, fans, and history to ensure that they will be challenging for Big Ten titles again soon.

Michigan will win this game because they are hungry, they have a lot to prove to themselves and their fans, and they have the best player on the field. MSU is solid, and they will throw a lot of punches, and there will be times when I will think we are going to lose...but in the end the best player on the field will make the play that he needs to make. Don't be suprised if Stonum runs one back for a TD too.

Why does that stat warrant repeating? Does it have any bearing on tomorrow's game... or is that all expect to be able to say after tomorrow's game?
